STUDENT  LEARNING

Celebrations of learning at Lucas Primary School

Year 3/4 in Term 3

Reading:

In Reading, students have been exploring the Author’s message in fiction and nonfiction texts. Classes have been viewing a variety of texts, such as ‘Bluey’ (fiction) and ‘Poverty and Hunger’ (non fiction). They have been using analysing and critiquing skills to identify what the author is trying to teach the reader and what the moral or big idea might be. Students have also been exploring text features for both fiction and non-fiction texts, discussing their purposes and how they make the text interesting.

Writing:

In Writing, students have been exploring narratives. They have been working through the writing process of brainstorming, planning, drafting, editing and publishing. Individually, students have created two narrative pieces based on adventure and mystery themes.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, students have been learning about 3D objects. They were able to classify, compare and create 3D objects using pop sticks and blue tac/play dough, and then using these to identify the object’s properties (Faces, Edges and Vertices). Students have been looking at location. Students learnt different directional language, map features and how to read grid coordinates. They then showcased this learning by creating a map of an island.

Integrated Studies:

In Integrated Studies, students have been learning about History in the 1750s from different perspectives of people. Students recently participated in an incursion from History Box focusing on the First Australians and the arrival of the First Fleet. Students engaged with hands-on learning activities such as crushing various spices to create Allspice, making toys out of clay and natural resources as well as playing a wide range of historical games such as Ngaka-Ngaka and knuckles. Students were also exposed to traditional garments and the history behind these.
