EARLY STAGE 1

Early Stage 1 News!

As Term 3 comes to a close, we would like to celebrate the incredible progress and enthusiasm our Kindergarten students have shown. This term has been filled with exciting learning experiences that have helped build a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, and social development.

Literacy: Our focus this term has been on continuing to develop reading and writing skills. Students have been exploring a variety of texts, including picture books, poems, and simple stories. They have been practising letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and sight words through fun, interactive activities such as shared reading, word games, and writing simple sentences. Many students are now confidently identifying beginning sounds and blending letters to read basic words.

Numeracy: In numeracy, we have continued to build number sense by counting, sorting, and comparing quantities up to 20. Students have engaged in hands-on activities like using counters, blocks, and number charts to understand concepts such as addition, subtraction, and patterns. We also introduced simple measurement activities, including comparing lengths and weights, which helped develop their observation and reasoning skills.

Social and Emotional Learning: We have also placed emphasis on building social skills and emotional resilience. Students have been learning to express their feelings, work cooperatively with peers, and develop independence in daily routines. Group activities, circle time discussions, and mindfulness exercises have supported their confidence and ability to manage emotions.

Our Pearly Whites

Many of our Kindergarten students had a visit to the NSW Health Primary School Mobile Dental Program at school during the early weeks of Term 3. They visited the dental van to have their teeth examined, cleaned and fluoride applied. After their visit, the students received a bag of goodies to help them with looking after their teeth. Check out some of the shiny smiles after their visits.

Kindergarten Mathematics

Number Sense - Kindergarten have been developing their understanding of what numbers mean and how they work. Through play-based experiences with numbers and materials, the students explore how they work, how they relate to each other, numbers can be broken into parts and be put back together, and recognising small quantities without counting. The more chances they get to interact with numbers in different ways, the stronger their number sense becomes. Here they are engaging in some activities that build a better understanding of numbers.

Length - Students used a piece of string, a crayon and their hand to compare lengths. They had to find things around the classroom that were shorter or longer.

Friends of 10 - Kindergarten have been busy finding combinations of numbers that make 10.

Directed Drawing

This term, Kindergarten have been working with Mrs Scott-Glassock, our EAL/D Specialist teacher, to develop their speaking and listening skills through drawing by giving and hearing instructions. Sometimes these activities were completed with a partner and other times it was by themselves.  We have seen a boost in students' confidence, listening, creativity and enjoyment.

Sport

In their weekly sport lessons, Kindergarten students have been learning fundamental movement skills. They have been practising balancing and jumping, and enjoying fun relay games with their peers! It's been wonderful to see their skills developing over Term 3.

Book Week Parade

Kindergarten booked an adventure and came dressed as their favourite book characters for this year's book week parade. The students shared their love of books with the rest of the school.

We would like to sincerely thank all parents and carers for their continued support throughout the term. Your involvement in reading at home, attending school events, and encouraging your child’s learning makes a significant difference in their success.

We look forward to an exciting Term 4 filled with new challenges and celebrations as we continue to nurture a love of learning in our Kindergarten students.
