What's Been Happening?  - Book Week Edition

 AUTHOR'S ALL AROUND!

FORMER ST CECILIA'S TEACHER, NOW AUTHOR RUTH MCGURK RETURNS!

Last week Ruth McGurk kicked off our book week celebrations when she returned to St Cecilia's to talk about how she became a children's author. We were very lucky to have had Ruth's talents as a teacher at St Cecilia's some ten years ago, and we were so delighted to have her back to share her wonderful stories and expertise with our students.

Ruth presented to our junior and middle students in such an engaging and accessible way about how any of them can be writers, illustrators and creators, encouraging them to record their ideas, persist and be patient to building ideas into stories and believing in themselves as storytellers.

Ruth's books are so relatable for both children and parents. She now has three picture storybooks out.

YEAR 5/6 CHAT WITH AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR ONLINE

The Year 4-6s thoroughly enjoyed meeting Matt Cosgrove and Eva Amores. They are best known for the Macca’s the Alpaca and The Worst Week Ever series of books.

The students enjoyed an engaging workshop where ideas and inspiration came to life.

Matt & Eva entertained us with stories and drawings of characters, as well as creative and crazy ideas.

The drawing workshop meant we were all illustrators, creating fun and humorous drawings.

An enjoyable, entertaining and educational session for all!!

Year 4 Book Week Activities

                                        By Amelia.C and Ava.K and Charlotte.M

On Monday the whole school had the Book Week Parade. Afterwards the year 4s listened and watched the shortlisted book ‘We Live On A Bus’ by Dave Pezold. We had the opportunity to draw one of the illustrations in our own way. Our illustrations show the point of view of looking up at the trees from the ground. We enjoyed listening to the story of traveling around Australia in a bus and creating our artwork.

Year 2 Mystery Readers

One of the highlights of Book Week is the involvement of our parents and special family members as mystery readers. From the Photo Gallery below you can seem just how delighted and engaged our Year 2 students were  whenever a new Mystery Reader arrived to share a story.

Year 3 visit to Melbourne Museum and IMAX Theatre

On Thursday, Year 3 experienced storytelling of a different kind when they went on an excursion to Melbourne Museum as part of their studies of Indigenous Australians.

We were fascinated by the display of possum skin cloaks, with the stories and totems of their owners carefully etched onto the possum hides.

We also enjoyed learning about the story behind the most complete skeleton of a triceratops displayed anywhere in the world.

At the Imax theatre, we were able to watch the story of Jemma, who grew up on Green Island and had the Great Barrier Reef as her backyard growing up. Her passion for the reef and its inhabitants was inspiring, and the cinematography was breathtaking.
