5/6 Classrooms

What´s been happening in the 56s?
English Literacy
In Writing, students have completed persuasive texts on whether children should have the right to work. Throughout the process, they’ve learned to link topic and concluding sentences with purpose, embed evidence effectively, and elaborate in thoughtful, varied ways. To finish the term, we’ll be exploring the power of persuasive devices.
In Reading, students are connecting deeply to Rivet Boy and showing insight in their predictions and inferences. We’re exploring how characters use power—sometimes for greed, control and exploitation, but also for hope and goodwill.
In Grammar, we’ve explored grammar concepts connected to persuasive devices, including pronouns for inclusive language, commas for the rule of three, second-person point of view for calls to action, and modality.
Spanish Literacy
In Reading and Writing, we continued to focus on Persuasive texts. Students have been thinking and describing (orally and in written) apps of their interest and they even started creating their own apps. All this, while further developing their vocabulary resources and using a variety of subordinating conjunctions to make complex sentence.
In Grammar, we have been learning how to identify when a word needs a "tilde" (the graphic accent). We have explored different types of words (agudas,, graves y esdrújulas) and learnt the rules to remember when each group of words needs a tilde.
Mathematics
After a few challenging but rewarding weeks of Tier 2, we are back in Tier 1 working on Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. The focus this week has been on strengthening the basis of fractional thinking to continue building new knowledge in the following weeks.
Cultural Studies
In Cultural Studies, we are working towards building content knowledge of Aztec, Inca and Maya ancient civilisations. Next week, students will begin to use this knowledge to start working on their project for the 2025 Newlands Art Show. We are excited to pitch the project to the students and start creating our own model civilisations focusing on key structures and pieces of architecture designed by the Inca, Mayan and Aztec people.
A Tour of Parliament
On Wednesday, we went on a super exciting excursion to Parliament House. The students had the opportunity to visit the red and green rooms (and actually sit on the chairs!). There, they were explained who sits and works in those rooms, how they are elected by Australian citizens over 18 and how their decisions impact our society. Lastly, we visited the library and we listened to the story of the golden maze that was stolen over 130 years ago and still hasn´t been found! The children spent a wonderful day which ended with a picnic in Treasury Garden.
