Virtual Design

Year 4

In Year 4 Virtual Design Innovation, students will embark on their first journey into the exciting world of design. They will be introduced to fundamental design concepts such as unity, balance, contrast, emphasis, scale, and repetition—core elements that shape creative thinking. Drawing inspiration from the iconic principles of industrial designer Dieter Rams, known for his work with Braun, students will explore how thoughtful design influences the world around us. Their practical projects will include creating both an item of clothing and a unique ‘signature shoe’. True to the subject’s name, students will also discover how to transform 2D sketches into immersive 3D creations using Virtual Reality headsets and the digital painting tool ‘Open Brush’. This intuitive, computer-assisted design platform allows students to bring their ideas to life in a fully three-dimensional space. Year 4 Virtual Design Innovation offers a one-of-a-kind introduction to a diverse and captivating discipline.

Year 6

In Year 6 Virtual Design, students will explore both traditional and digital design mediums—from the simplicity of pencil and paper to the complexity of raster graphics editors and immersive Virtual Reality tools. Through this diverse exploration, they’ll be encouraged to question and define what makes ‘good design,’ and whether such a concept can ever truly be objective. In a rich and thought-provoking unit that sits at the crossroads of art, culture, and history, students will delve into the street cultures of three iconic European cities: Berlin, shaped by its fractured past; London, a dynamic mix of grandeur and rebellion; and Paris, steeped in elegance and romance. Drawing on their insights, students will then develop a ‘European product line’ inspired by the unique character of a city of their choice.
