MATER DEI'S GOT TALENT
We had a fantastic selection of talent from our students at the College last Friday August 22. From Dad jokes to synchronised swimming, we were entertained and brought to laughter by some fun loving and talented individuals. Our winners on the day were dancers Imogen Carey and Stella McGarry. Congratulations to all those who participated in Mater Dei’s Got Talent.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP 2026
Over the past few weeks we have been completing our processes for Student Leadership 2026. It was incredible to see 26 young people put forward an application and sit an interview process with the College Leadership and House Leaders.
The process was completed this week with applicants delivering a speech to staff and peers that showed an amazing awareness of their own experiences within our community, and a desire to ensure that those coming behind them get the same opportunities and support from student leaders that they did. Students spoke of contributing to culture, modeling virtues and inspiring connection.
Regardless of who wears a badge in Year 12 2026, we know that the College will continue to build in spirit with the exceptional leadership qualities of this year group.
Congratulations to all those who took the opportunity to apply for this experience and look forward to watching your leadership skills grow over the next 12 months.
MATER DEI SPRING CARNIVAL
Spring is in the air! It’s that time again for our annual Mater Dei Spring Carnival which will be held next Friday 5 September. We would love for everyone to get around faux fashions and enjoy spending the day together with some fun activities including a fashion parade and Year 12 horse races.
So what does Faux Fashion look like? It could be your grandfather's sunday best, race day outfits like old fashioned dresses and suits, wearing a shirt inside out or as simple as wearing two different shoes. Please be reminded that the Spring Carnival is not about spending a lot of money on dress ups, so recycle old clothing from home, or if you do need to buy an item for Faux Fashions, try St Vincent de Paul or support other charity shops.
AGE RESTRICTIONS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
The social media age restrictions will be enforced from 10 December 2025 of this year. Platforms entering age restrictions include: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, X, YouTube and others.
The eSafety Commissioner has recommended that it will give more time for teenagers to develop important skills and maturity. ‘It’s breathing space to build digital literacy, critical reasoning, impulse control and greater resilience.’ (eSafety Commissioner, 2025) Optus Digital Thumbprint presenters communicated that if children have social media accounts, they will be placed on hold until they reach the age of 16 years.
