Visual Arts

In the second part of the term, students turned their attention to the colourful world of Yayoi Kusama, the “Princess of Polka Dots.” Her playful and vibrant style has transformed our art room into a world of colour and pattern. Using recycled cardboard and mixed materials, students have created incredible Kusama-inspired artworks:
- F/1 students made spotty foil fish, crafted from cereal boxes, wool, and foil, then decorated with bright paint and colourful dots. These will come together to form a floating installation in our school.
- 2/3 students designed bold mushrooms, cutting and painting recycled boxes before finishing them with Kusama’s signature dots.
- 3/4 students combined ideas from both Kusama and Picasso to create striking cardboard portraits and masks.
5/6 students built eye-catching cardboard sculptures inspired by Kusama’s famous “Dancing Pumpkin” and other works.
Their creations are so impressive that we will display them around the school for everyone to enjoy!
It has been a wonderfully creative term, and we can’t wait to share more of our students’ amazing artworks with the whole school community.
Looking Ahead
The next unit for Visual Arts has students continuing to use recycled cardboard and household items to create animal portraits, monsters and moving creatures.
Special Thanks!
We are very lucky to have a wonderful artist, Libby Bourke who you might know from morning or after school care, volunteering her time in the art room. She brings her creative skills, fresh ideas, and kind support to help students explore their own artistic talents. Her guidance and encouragement make the art room an even more inspiring place to learn and create.
Get Involved!
We’d love your help in the art room! Whether it’s assisting during sessions, donating materials, or sharing your own creative skills, your involvement makes a big difference. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you're interested.
150 years of MPS celebrations in Term 4!
If you have any skills in creating large artistic pieces or murals then we would love your help next term! We will be creating a large-scale mural to celebrate the 150 years of MPS. The goal is for the mural to be completed by week 6 for the school celebrations. Can you lend a hand?
Thank you,
Felicity Brennan
