The 2024 Duke of Edinburgh Camp was an exhilarating experience for all participants, blending thrilling adventures with significant personal achievements. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Cathedral Ranges, the camp took place at the picturesque Cooks Mill, offering an ideal setting for young adventurers to challenge themselves and forge lasting memories.
The Duke of Edinburgh Camp in my school is a beacon of resilience, leadership, and self-discovery and once again paved the way for an unforgettable journey for our attendees. This year’s camp united a diverse group of young people, all driven to surpass their limits and achieve their aspirations. On the first day we completed a tough summit of Sugarloaf Peak. Sugarloaf Peak stands as a testament to the natural beauty and grandeur of Australia. This lesser-known marvel offers time for adventure and a steep rock scramble was overcome and a brilliant early test for young adventurers. On day two we traversed the expanses of the Cathedral Ranges, a breathtaking expanse of rugged peaks, verdant valleys, and awe-inspiring vistas. This natural wonder is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that beckons adventurers, nature enthusiasts, and those seeking an escape into the sublime beauty of Australia’s wilderness. On day three we finished a walk to the top of the beautiful Steavenson’s Fall. It’s also an enchanting experience that promises to mesmerise every visitor. We were captivated by the magic of Steavenson Falls, the crown jewel of Victoria’s natural landscape and a fitting end to a challenging and rewarding Duke of Ed Camp. Thanks to Mr Smyth, Mr Billings and Ms D’Arcy for assisting on our journey.
From the Students.
"The Cathedral Ranges camp was nice, I really enjoyed being closer to nature and being able to appreciate it in a scenic environment."
“I hiked up to Sugarloaf Peak, Little and Cathedral Peak and enjoyed doing this because it was fun hiking, I was challenged by climbing up the mountain. I got great memories out of camp of hiking and having fun in nature.”
“Surprisingly, I enjoyed the second day’s long hike, even though many of my classmates were dreading it. The hike felt peaceful and gave me a chance to fully immerse myself in the present moment. I gained a new appreciation for nature’s beauty and simplicity, experiencing it in a way I hadn’t anticipated before”
“This experience changed my perspective, making me appreciate nature and the simple aspects of camp life. I would absolutely do this again and highly recommend it for those genuinely interested in connecting with nature, beyond just the Duke of Ed jumper.”
“I enjoyed the serenity and quiet when other people weren't talking, sitting in the river was also nice and it was just good to be immersed in nature.”
Duke of Ed camp was really enjoyable. We completed the Sugarloaf Peak Walk, this included rock climbing which I am passionate about. We setup camp, learnt about our surroundings, and got prepared for the next days. On day two we completed the northern circuit which went from 9.00 in the morning to 4.30 in the afternoon, this was exhausting but easy as we were given the pleasant views around us. On the final day we walked Stevenson's Falls Walk, I've been there before but regardless it was nice to do. I enjoyed the late campfire nights chatting to the teachers. Especially the last night talking to Billo and eating my chocolate. The biggest challenge was starvation as I didn't pack 50,000 calories every meal and was famished after the walks. The takeaway I got was progress towards my bronze Duke of Ed award.”
