Victorian All Schools Track & Field Championships

Vermont was represented by 7 athletes at the recent Victorian All Schools Track & Field Championships. The event was held over two weekends at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. It was a highly competitive event as always, with the best from around the state competing with the hopes of either qualifying for nationals, featuring on the podium, obtaining a new personal best, or simply returning to competition after some time off.

Year 8 student Craig C had an exceptional day of competition on Sunday in weekend 2. Craig competed in the U15M Long Jump and placed 3rd. As a result, Craig has been invited to compete at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Queensland early next month. We wish you all the best Craig!

Year 7 Table Tennis

On the 18th of October 2024, the Year 7 table tennis team set their minds on a common goal, ending the day with a trip to McDonald’s. Starting our day at 8:45, we took a bus trip to Kilsyth Stadium. The bus trip was filled with light-hearted interactions which boosted our chemistry, ready for us to conquer the Eastern Metropolitan Region.

We extended our winning streak by beginning our journey through regionals with a 6-0 win against Auburn High School. We then crushed the hopes of the Lilydale table tennis team ever making it to state with another 6-0 win. Our next match proved to be the hardest of them all. This was the last match of our group stage; the other team has also not lost a single match. If we lost, the McDonald’s dream would be over.

Our opponents, Balwyn High School, had a great start, winning the first singles, however we remained determined and pulled through the next 3 games winning with close scores. All we had to do now was win one doubles match to keep our McDonald’s dream alive. With this in mind, we smashed them with many tricky moves resulting in a well-deserved win.

Now, it was time for the semi-final match against South Oakleigh Secondary College. We had to win this; the stakes were high. We were in the thick of it, we couldn’t lose.

We began 4-0 win automatically advancing us to the Grand Final. Now was the time to fully lock in. We started with a 3-1 lead against East Doncaster increasing our hopes to McDonald’s. We knew what we had to do and that was winning this championship but then the table turned. There were 2 tiebreakers each at 12-12, all we needed was 2 points to win the championship. Sadly, the opponents took advantage of our nerves and overcome us.

Now the matches were tied, and it all came down to the points. After long calculations, we had lost by 2 points. We were heartbroken but proud. Then we went to McDonald’s and forgot all about it.

Thanks to Mr. G for being our bus driver, and a big thank you to Josh for supporting us throughout our journey. Also, a big thanks to our Year 8 coaches, Alvin and Jaden, for giving us helpful advice in between our matches.
