Learning Highlights

Some future firefighters in the making!
A group of Year 11/12 students had the exciting opportunity to experience a presentation from Tasmania Fire Service Recruitment Officer Alex. Learning about the different tools, skills and jobs that a day in the life of a firefighter might entail, some students even got to try on the full firefighting gear.
As our Year 12 students enter their final days at MacKillop, this was a wonderful chance to learn more about a potential future pathway. Asking plenty of insightful questions as they learned how physics, science and maths can all be useful in the world of firefighting.
A special time for Remembrance in November
As we approach Remembrance Day and to compliment the unit of work on World War I in Humanities and Social Sciences, our Year 9 students had a chance to visit the Cenotaph and the Soldier's Memorial Walk to apply their historical learning.
Students had the opportunity to learn about some of the stories of soldiers who died in World War I as they made their way along the Soldier's Memorial Walk.
Three Capes Track
Our Year 10 Outdoor Education students have successfully completed the challenging Three Capes Track.
This three-day, two-night hike covered a total of 55 kilometers, showcasing some of Tasmania's most stunning coastal scenery, including the towering dolerite sea cliffs, which are over 300 meters tall and the highest in Australia. This adventure provided an excellent opportunity for students to develop their outdoor living skills, build resilience, and create lasting memories.
A special thank you goes to the dedicated staff who guided and supported the students throughout this journey. Your commitment and encouragement were invaluable to the success of this experience. Congratulations to all the participants and staff for their outstanding effort and achievement!
Caritas Just Leadership Day
On Thursday 7 November, six Year 7 and 8 students from MacKillop attended the Caritas Just Leadership Day at St Aloysius in Hobart. This day brought together students from local schools to deepen and further their understanding of social justice and the mission and goals of charitable organisations such as Caritas, Vinnies, and Catholic Mission.
The day began with icebreaker activities designed to help the students get to know one another and build a sense of community. Through fun and interactive games, the students quickly connected with their peers from other schools, setting the tone for a day of learning and collaboration.
As the day unfolded, representatives from Caritas, Vinnies, and Catholic Mission shared powerful stories of their work in supporting those who are vulnerable and needing support, helping students grasp the importance of social justice and solidarity.
In the afternoon, the students came together in their school groups to brainstorm ideas for fundraising initiatives that could support each school’s existing ministry programs. These discussions sparked creativity and enthusiasm, with students suggesting a variety of ways to raise awareness and funds for the important work of these organisations. Keep an eye out in 2025 for some new and exciting fundraisers!
The Caritas Just Leadership Day was a valuable opportunity for MacKillop students to engage with their peers, learn about the work of various charities, and reflect on their role in promoting justice and compassion in the world. It was a day of inspiration, learning, and a renewed commitment to making a difference.

Sporting Success!
Recently we had 3 teams participate in the State High School Netball Championships, in Launceston. Across two days with plenty of travel time and a lot of hard work, we had some amazing results across the teams entered.
The Year 7/8 Boys finished the day as State Champions! This team is the first MacKillop boys team to do so as they defeated St. Pats by one point. With Harry Scott (Year 8) scoring goal in the final seconds to take the win and Mitchell Scott (Year 8) taking out Most Valuable Player.
The Year 9/10 Boys finished the day in 3rd. The team played very well under the coaching of Mr Gregg.
The Year 9/10 Girls finished the day in 5th place competing against some tough teams from the North of the state.
Congratulations to all students who participated and all staff who helped out, you should be very proud of your efforts.
