Updates from our Pastoral Groups (Units)

Foundation ~ Prep News

Over the past two weeks, our Prep students have been actively engaged in learning with the support of older students, creating a collaborative and vibrant environment that fosters both growth and connection. Together, they’ve explored various topics and activities, from exploring 'sharing and groups' in Maths, to seeking out resources and researching bug houses and the unique new seed pods on the trees around the Prep area. They've also had the opportunity to test their homemade lemonade, preparing a special treat for our upcoming bake sale.

This cross-age learning experience is more than just joy; it shows significant benefits for both younger and older students in these types of interactions. This approach has been shown to improve academic skills, build confidence, and enhance social skills. For younger students, it provides a role model they can look up to, helping them feel comfortable taking on new challenges with the guidance and support of an older peer. For the older students, guiding and teaching younger ones reinforces their understanding and builds essential leadership skills, empathy, and patience.

The beauty of cross-age learning lies in the way it strengthens our school community, creating bonds across year levels and fostering a sense of mutual respect and shared purpose. As these young learners work together on projects like creating bug houses, learning about nature, and preparing for events, maths and literacy activities, they are building both academic and life assets and dispositions that will serve them well in the years to come.
