From the Year 5 Classroom

The Year 5 students recently took part in an ASPIRE Leadership incursion. This was a full day workshop where students were encouraged to have a positive and lasting impact on our school as they become the leaders of Sacred Heart in 2025.

Sessions included:

· Leading with or without a badge

· The Epic Race

· Knowing Me, Growing Me

Students learnt the acronym ASPIRE stands for .. Action, Serve, Persist, Influence, Respect and Encourage.

The Year 5s had a great day. It was engaging for all the students and they had an opportunity to develop their confidence and leadership skills.

Last Wednesday was the day the students had been eagerly awaiting ... the day they would meet their Prep 2025 buddies. Bookmarks had been made so that they could be shared with the incoming students. Grade 5 and incoming Prep students spent some time creating a bear puppet and getting to know each other while enjoying the junior playground, sandpit and various activities in the Mercy Centre. As the year progresses, students and their buddies will have several more interactions.

In Writing, the students have begun writing their Leadership speeches and aligning themselves with two of the Mercy Values: Courage, Respect, Justice, Hospitality, Service and Compassion. Students will present their speeches to all members of the cohort along with Mrs Gorman and/or Mr Griffin. All children in Year 6 in 2025 will be a member of one of the school’s leadership teams.

In Reading, we have been studying ‘The Last Bear’ by Hannah Gold. The book has helped us better understand the harmful effects of pollution and climate change on the world’s polar bear population.

The focus of our current Maths topic is Algebra - finding unknown values in equations (eg. 17 x 3 = 60 - ... ). This can be using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division or a combination of 2, 3 or 4 operations.

The Year 5 students had an enjoyable day participating in a friendly Kanga cricket match on Monday, competing against the P-12 team. All students demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and represented the school proudly.
