Disability Inclusion at Concord School
Concord School is having a very successful transition to the Disability Inclusion reform this year. We have had about thirty Disability Inclusion meetings so far, with many more scheduled to take place this term.
Disability Inclusion has two purposes for our school. Firstly, it is helping our school to continue to understand what each student requires to help them learn and participate at school. At Concord School, the staff are experts in providing programs, supports, adjustments and the right environment to support the individual needs of each of our amazing students. Secondly, the Disability Inclusion Profile replaces the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) application process.
Included in this new process is the Disability Inclusion Profile meeting. The Disability Inclusion Profile meeting discusses the strengths and goals of the student, as well as the supports and adjustments for the student. A discussion about 31 different activities takes place in a positive and strength based approach. The types of adjustments discussed are those that are talked about during the SSG meetings each term, and some of these are also listed on the students’ Individual Education Plans. They include, but are not limited to:
- Consistent and predictable routines
- 1:1 support from an Education Support or class teacher at times
- Learning tasks are broken down into small steps
- Having visual representation of instructions
- Using a separate, quite room with adult support to complete learning tasks
- Having access to sensory tools and fidget items
- Speech therapy and OT support
- Using a social story to prepare for a change to the usual routine
