Foundation

The focus this term for the Foundation students this term was on learning basic hand building techniques to make a initial wall hanging and a ceramic bird. They were explicitly taught the importance of using the score, slip and smooth technique with adding and joining pieces of clay together. The students had fun learning how to add texture to clay through the use of impressions. They were given the opportunity to step on their clay slab or press highly textured fabric onto it such as a doily or hessian.  The executed what they knew about clay forms and shapes to create both their initial and the features of the bird.

Grade 1/2

The grade 1/2's have actively been learning about collage, more importantly they are learning how to assembly and reassemble pieces of their collages as well as overlapping its. They have just completed a unit which focused on applying their knowledge of various techniques by making a mixed media piece based on the theme of a 'hot air balloon'.  Students revisited key art concepts such as line, colour and shape when making their balloons. They then had fun learning how to use the wet on wet technique when using watercolour paints. Students focused on how to dilute paint and 'move the pigment/colour using the water'. As part of this unit we also discussed how to you transparent and opaque colours and how when using watercolour we lighten shades with the use of water instead using white. Finally, we add photography with students have their photographs included in their collage.

This week students explored how to add another dimension to their collage artwork by using the technique of overlapping and creating cut outs for the various shapes that they have made by creating a hamburger or favourite food item. Once again students revisited key art elements such as colour and shape to make a monster hamburger. They examined which lines to use when cutting out shapes of the different ingredients needed.

Grade 3/4

In Term Four, students have been learning about various contemporary Modern Australian Artists. Beginning with examining the artwork of Donna Sharam while examining her use of bright, bold colours and patterns to create art work of various animals. Later on, we have moved onto Mulga the Artist. As part of this terms unit, students learnt how artists can present and sell their work in different ways. While also examining the similarities and differences of these two artist, students learnt that both of these artists had been commissioned by Maxwell Williams to display their artworks on various homewares. As the unit on Mulga the Artist continued students explored various ways that they could personify their objects and or animals using humour. Students had fun adding sunglasses, moustaches and other items to their drawings. To conclude the unit, they replicated his iconic cloud signature and examined different icons that they could use to  sign their artwork.

Grade 5

So far this term the Grade 5 students have been creating felt Christmas Ornaments. They learnt how to create a simple pattern based on a simple shape. They then proceeded to learn how to create a running stitch as well as how to stuff an item. Students then were encouraged to add additional details to their ornament using either additional felt, buttons and/or beads. Some students were so motivated by this unit to make a series of ornaments and other decided that they would extend themselves by making miniature pillows.

Grade 6

This term, Grade 6 students have been busily creating their artwork for their Graduation. So far they are in the process of making their graduation bears and their acetate self portraits which will all be unveiled during the big night.

As part of this process students have been learning how to frame their artwork to present in a professional manner.
