Shrine Excursion

On 11 November, fourteen Year 10 Humanities students attended the 90th anniversary Remembrance Day ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. This unique excursion allowed us to participate in a significant commemoration of those who served and sacrificed, and we gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of remembrance.

The ceremony began with an Acknowledgment of Country to the Bunurong Boon Wurrung People’s, to whom this land will always belong. After, the commemoration began. It consisted of the consulates from various countries allied with Australia, each coming and laying wreaths at the base of the shrine, followed by the Governor of Victoria, Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, and Jacinta Allen, the premier of Victoria. Later, other people and schools were also invited to lay their own wreaths.

Then came the sounding of The Last Post, a call that marked the start of a one-minute silence. Cannons fired, and planes flew overhead, creating a powerful moment to honour those who never returned and reflect on their sacrifices.

After the ceremony, we had the privilege of a guided tour of the Shrine, which enhanced our understanding of the history and symbolism within this sacred space. The experience brought to life the stories of service and sacrifice, illustrating the profound impact of the Shrine as a place of collective memory and respect.

As part of our visit, we learned about the Shrine’s architecture, symbolism, and the traditions associated with honouring Australia’s servicemen and women. Walking through the Shrine, we could see how each element of the design was intended to serve as a reminder of those who served in the armed forces. We were particularly moved by the Eternal Flame, which stands as a lasting tribute to all who have sacrificed for the nation.

This meaningful excursion deepened our understanding of Australia’s history and the enduring significance of Remembrance Day. On behalf of the Year 10 Humanities students, we extend our gratitude to our teachers and guides who made this experience possible.
