Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES)

Last Friday a group of Grade 3 & 4 students participated in an online Mathematics Enrichment opportunity coordinated by Arc.

Arc is the Department of Education's digital platform that provides Victorian teachers and students with access to curriculum-aligned resources, professional learning opportunities, and safe and reliable software and technologies.

The event was heavily attended with some with local and rural primary schools and an opportunity to see how other students and schools investigate into such challenging mathematics problems.

Students grappled with 4 complex problems that involved counting, patterns, sequences and puzzles. They also had the opportunity to explore ideas such as, binomial coefficients, partitioning techniques and algorithmic thinking. Students were challenged not only to find a solution, but to also be in a position where they could clearly identify the particular strategy or steps involved to find that solution, which many found difficult to explain.

We cannot wait to explore many more opportunities to extend our students thinking for the rest of the term and into the future!
