Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Brittlee, Toni & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: In Reading, Year 4 students are looking at conventions within a text through the novel Harry Potter written by JK Rowling. Students have been using two texts to compare and identify descriptive language in this text to support their visualisation. Students are currently determining the language that supports the character descriptions, setting, emotions and feelings in Harry Potter. Continuing into weeks 5 and 6 students will investigate persuasive texts as well as work on their independent reading goals.

In Writing, we have been working our way through the Writing Process. Students have been using descriptive words and phrases from their writing to include in their writing as they follow the Writing Cycle. Students will continue this process whilst starting to expand into persuasive writing, highlighting features that are unique in this text style whilst learning how the audience and reasoning with differing opinions and topics can make an impact. Continuing into weeks 5 and 6 students will write persuasive paragraphs practising these skills.

Numeracy:  In Numeracy, Year 4 students have worked through multiple strategies such as learning arrays, differing methods to solve multiplicative algorithms and worded problem strategies when solving problems. Students will be exploring how to use their knowledge in this area of the curriculum when working with division problems. Students are continuing Number Sense activities. This is a process where students increase their knowledge of factors through games and are given a goal to work towards in relation to their multiples knowledge. Students are continuing to use online programs such as Essential Assessment, reinforcing skills whilst targeting specific individual goals.

Inquiry: Students have had the opportunity to visit the National Gallery of Victoria, learning about William Barak and his influence on the First Nations Community. Students have continued to learn about European Settlement and the impact this has had on indigenous communities. Students will be applying their knowledge through readings and research tasks.

Willy Kids & Respectful Relationships:

Our fortnightly focus has been: Willy Kids Wonder. Students are exploring their wonderings through brainstorms and sharing what they wonder about.

This week grade 4 students have studied respectful relationships lessons on strengths, what this means and what personal strengths do they have.
