Year One Team News

The Year One teachers are enjoying listening to our class pet adventures. The penguins are certainly having a wonderful time visiting our Willy Kids. Our penguins love hanging out with the kids at home, and definitely don’t need to be taken on special trips. They are simple creatures, really!
Curriculum Focus: Weeks 5 - 6
Reading: During this term we will be covering stage 7.2 of the Little Learners Love Literacy program. Our focus for week 6 will be the phoneme /air/ represented by the grapheme ‘air’. During week 6 we will be revising what we have learnt so far this term.
Writing: We will be learning how to create an information report on a chosen animal. Our focus for information reports include writing structure, summarising facts learned and using writing techniques to engage the readers.
Numeracy: We will be learning about location and giving and following directions to familiar places. During week 6 we will be focusing on collecting, recording and interpreting data.
Inquiry: Our topic this term is “How and why do we care for animals? How do animals care for us?”.
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: There is a focus on problem solving over the next few weeks. Our Willy Kids focus is “Willy Kids are Problem Solvers". We will be trying different approaches to solve problems and asking for help when we need it. During our Respectful Relationships sessions our topic this term is Personal Strengths. We will be learning to identify and describe personal strengths, explain how these strengths contribute to school and family life, as well as identifying ways to care for others, including ways of making and keeping friends.
Show and Tell (repeat)
This term, Show and Tell will look a bit different to last term. Our kids have been incredibly excited to adopt our class ‘pets’ (who are very fashionable in their jumpers). Students will take turns taking home their class pet and taking them on adventures and looking after them. During the two days that students have the pet they will need to write a recount in the workbook provided of what exciting things they have done together. On the day they return the pet to class, they will present this recount to the class. We please ask that you ensure the pet is returned to school on the designated day to ensure that each student gets a fair chance to take them home. The schedule is as follows:
Take home Monday → return Wednesday
Take home Wednesday → return Friday
Take home Friday → return Monday
Warm regards,
