Prep Team News

with Caitlin, Hayley & Andrea

Hello Prep families,

The Preps have well and truly settled back into school now that we are in Week Four!  It has been a great fortnight, particularly as we prepare for our Mother’s Day afternoon tea on Friday.

With the change of season brings illness and colds! We ask that if your child is unwell, to please keep them home until they are better. This helps to keep other students and staff well. Thank you for your support.

Our Willy Kid focus this fortnight is ‘Willy Kids Wonder’. As our inquiry topic this term is ‘Changes around Us’, the Preps have been busy sharing and recording their wonderings about change, to help shape our inquiry for the term. What curious learners we have!

Wicked Weather Incursion

Next Wednesday, the Preps are taking part in our Wicked Weather Incursion, as part of our inquiry unit. Students will participate in a range of experiments to learn about change.  Please ensure you have provided permission and payment via Compass prior to next Wednesday.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea

In honour of our wonderful mums we will be hosting a special afternoon just for them! We would love for all Prep mums to join us in your child’s classroom at 2:45pm on Friday 10th May. The Prep students have been preparing something for the special people in their lives and they are very excited to share it with you all.

We are looking forward to welcoming our special visitors into the classrooms tomorrow. See you there!

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 3 - 4

Reading - Students will continue learning about appropriate reading behaviours, including pointing to the words as we read. They will also discuss text features such as full stops and capital letters. As part of our Little Learner’s program, students begin the year learning single letter sounds, with our current focus being the /l/ and /v/ sounds. To help us remember these sounds, we have met Leo the lion and Vicky the vulture. There are songs about these characters available online, which you may like to listen to with your child at home or in the car:

Leo Lion - Spotify

Vicky Vulture - Spotify

Writing - Students are learning to correctly form letters and use our sound knowledge to write sentences. This week we are focusing on forming the letters ‘l’ and ‘v’. We are also learning to read and write the heart words ‘she’, ‘he’, ‘we’, ‘to’, ‘do’ and ‘was’ this term.

Numeracy - Students are exploring the numbers 11-20. We are looking at making these numbers, matching the numerals to the quantities, comparing the size and recognising these numbers in varied arrangements.

Inquiry - This term, our inquiry topic is Changes Around Us. Our big questions will include: What is change? What things change? What is changing outside?

Homework - Each Monday, students will be given an activity to complete at home that relates to our weekly sound or maths focus. The activity in their ‘Home Learning Book’ will be collected each Friday. Homework in Prep should take no longer than 15 minutes.
