Calrossy at BEEF 2024

The Calrossy Cattle Team is back home after clocking up around 2000 kilometres in their latest trek to Rockhampton for Beef 2024. Renowned for being the largest beef industry event in the Southern Hemisphere, Beef 2024, is a massive six-day event including everything from Commercial and Stud Cattle Competitions, Carcase Cattle Competitions, Industry Innovations and experts and much more.

Calrossy took a team of 14 students from Years 8 to 11 to Rockhampton, who competed in all junior competitions early in the week, as well as showing the School’s stud Shorthorn heifers in the Stud Cattle Competition.

“We are also bringing three steers for the Junior Led Steer Competition and Junior Paraders.”

Cattle Team Manager and teacher, Mrs Kathy de Jong said the group of students were excited to attend an industry event of such calibre, and couldn’t wait to be on the ground in Rockhampton.

The suite of junior judging and parading competitions is complemented by the School’s Program, with more than 3,800 students from 66 schools in Queensland and NSW participating.

Mrs de Jong said the week provided invaluable learning and connections beyond the classroom for the students.

“It’s been an incredible experience for the students attending career evenings and talking to many industry representatives. They have been involved in university talks and have seen new innovations in agriculture”.

Calrossy’s success at Beef 2024 included;

• Hayley Hodges won the 15 year old age group paraders and was one of seven in the Grand Champion parader out of 500 leaders.
• In the 14 year old age group we came second (Stirling Wheatley), third (Ellie McCulloch) and foruth (Audrey Bower).
• Tegan Rhodes, Hugo Blomfield, Madison Bailey, Grace Newcombe, Issy Wheatley and Eve Maloney all made the finals of their age groups in Junior Judging.
• Our Junior Judging team made the top 11 out of 50 teams. The team was made up of Amelia Miller, Grace Newcombe, Shakaya Fenton and Ellie McCulloch.
• Madison Bailey led our School streer Cadillac, who came fourth in the heavyweight steer class and Hayley Hodges led her steer Tesla who came third in the lightweight steer class.
• Amelia Miller placed third in Junior Judging out of 400 competitors.
• In Shorthorn judging, Calrossy won Calf Champion, Reserve Calf and Junior Champion Shorthorn Heifer.
