Junior Primary Athletics Day

Once again, PVCC Junior school was blessed with magnificent conditions in which to hold a significant sporting carnival. The Junior Primary Athletics Day is an enormous day of activity. Between 9am and 1:30pm the students rotate, in their age groups, through eight different events: Shot Put, Discus, Long Jump and Triple Jump, qualifying heats for 100m and 200m, and then two novelty events with Skipping and a House Relay. The 100m and 200m finals, for the qualified students, are held in the afternoon; this is after all students have assembled in their houses and march proudly behind their house banner to the sprint finals track.

All students were either introduced, or had revision, for the various athletic events during Term 1 PE lessons with an emphasis on ‘doing a personal best (PB) – doing better than they did last time’. Although there was certainly some healthy competition, the level of support that the students gave each other within their age groups was phenomenal. Some individual students showed magnificent competency for, and a growing capacity with the nuances of, athletics events.

I wish to sincerely acknowledge the almighty efforts of our Year 3-6 staff who ran the events through the rotation stage of the carnival – it is a huge effort to ensure student safety, fairness in competition, and to administer all the relevant measuring, timing etc. I further acknowledge the nine Year 9 & 10 Duke of Edinburgh students (Amy W, Judah F, Kobi M, Tana C, Elijah A, Nicholas G, Stefan V, Tyson W, Nathaniel C) who assisted at the various events so wonderfully – be assured, our world is in good hands if these young people are an example of the diligence, helpfulness, fairness, and kindness that young people can demonstrate.

A range of students, based on their results/placings at the carnival will have qualified for District Athletics which will be held at Meadowglen Athletics in late August. All relevant details will be shared with those students well in advance of this event.
