Lots of news to report from the Career & Pathways Office this month!

YEAR 12

All Year 12 students will start to notice that a careers counselling appointment will be scheduled into their diary between now and the end of term. Where possible this will be arranged during a study period. This is your opportunity to ask me questions but also for me to provide you with information regarding your chosen pathway post Year 12.  Please come prepared to the meeting with your questions, this is the favourite part of my job; helping you find your passion and how you’re going to navigate your way there. And if you’re not sure what you want to do next, together we will find what is out there for you too.

Who is eligible to sit the UCAT?

The UCAT ANZ test is only available to a candidate whose educational level at the time of sitting the test is that they are undertaking or have completed the final year of secondary schooling, or higher. For example, candidates registering for UCAT ANZ 2024 should have completed, or plan to complete their final year of secondary schooling in 2024, that is, Year 12 in Australia or Year 13 in New Zealand.    Candidates are eligible to sit UCAT ANZ if they have commenced or completed an undergraduate degree. It is noted, however, that not all undergraduate degree programs for which UCAT ANZ is a prerequisite will offer places for non-school leavers. Candidates are advised to check the UCAT ANZ Consortium university websites for further information.    Only a limited number of UCAT ANZ Consortium universities require international students to sit UCAT ANZ and, if so, it will only be required in specific circumstances. Candidates are advised to check the UCAT ANZ Consortium university websites for further information.                                         (Reference: Pearson VUE, 2024)

YEAR 10 students have been busy organising their work experience placements which will begin on the week beginning 13 May 2024.    Please come and see me in my office or ask your teachers to come and see me so that I can give you some suggestions if you haven’t found anything yet.

YEAR 9

Recently, I found out I’m in the exact job I should be in!   I have completed my Morrisby Profile as part of some training. This career profiling tool is something our Year 9's will be supported to use starting from the end of May.

What is the Morrisby Profile? It is a handy career tool that looks at what you like doing, what you’re good at, what skills you’re better at than others, and what subjects, courses or jobs would suit you.  The good news is that the Profile said I should be a Careers Practitioner – so I’m confident it is very accurate! It also told me:

  • Whether I am better with words and/or numbers
  • Who I like to work with
  • How I like to work
  • Where I like to work
  • The tasks I like and don’t like
  • The industries I’d be great for
  • How I learn best
  • How I can get to where I want to go
  • Subject, course and career suggestions

What doing this test really told me is that when you understand your strengths, know what you like and don’t like, and listen to your inner voice, you will eventually follow the career path you’re meant to.    So, if you think you have no idea what career to follow, do what I did and what I still do today, and that is know your strengths, do what you like, do what you’re good at and do something people would pay money for and you’ll find the right job at that moment in time.   So, if you have a Morrisby Profile, please use it to help inform you of your subject, job and work placement choices.    And remember, it’s ok to change your mind or change your Morrisby Profile information so that it gives you up to date suggestions.
