Wellbeing
Term 2, Week 1
Students and staff have enjoyed settling back into school routines, expectations, and activities after a well-deserved break! This week, students have been learning about how to be Upstanders. This has included using the Stop, Walk and Talk strategy. Next week, we will launch Topic 3 from the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships Initiative: Positive Coping. In this topic, students will learn about identifying when they may need to use strategies to cope in various situations and how they can help others to do the same.
Activity
You may like to discuss the summary of the Stop, Walk and Talk strategy at home and describe situations when you may need to use it (school and community examples)
1. The Stop Signal
● Revise the school-wide “stop signal” (verbal and physical action) for unkind
behaviour. This is a low stop signal with your hand out (children will be able to show you)
● Practise the stop signal, and describe times it may need to be used.
2. Walk Away
● Repeat the above steps with different examples when practising ‘Walking Away’
● Remind children that walking away removes the reinforcement for unkind behaviour
3. Talk: report problems to an adult
● Remind children that even when they use “stop” and they “walk away” from the problem,
sometimes others may continue to behave inappropriately toward them. When that
happens, they should seek help from an adult
● Revise how important it is to follow the first two steps, as this can often solve the problem almost instantly. It also gives others the opportunity to change their behaviour quickly.
