Mola from Panama
A fantastic start to the term with all students investigating the art element of ‘Shape’ and how artists use it in their work.
The grade 1 and 2 students were inspired by Paul Klee’s Castle and Sun to design their own castle using only triangles, rectangles and squares (plus a sun for the sun or moon). It was quite a challenge to only use these shapes but the students were wonderful castle architects and designed some stunning castles, fit for any king or queen! The shapes were coloured in with oil pastel and given a white oil pastel border. They used the technique of oil pastel resist with a wash painted over their castle to unify the shapes and colours.
Grade 3 and 4 students learned about American artist Reggie Laurent who uses very colourful geometric and organic shapes in his work. The students created collages using many different type of shapes and then drew curved lines in the negative space around the shapes with white paint markers.
The Grade 5 and 6 students also investigated artists who use shape and learnt about the Molas from Panama. These molas are actually a textile art made by the Kuna Indians of North West Panama, which use several layers of colourful fabric and applique embroidery technique. Inspired by these textiles the students created paper molas with an animal shape as its focus and geometric shapes surrounding it.
