The Prodigal Son is a parable that Jesus told. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. Imagine a father of two sons, who has the younger son ask for his inheritance before it is due. The young son squanders his inheritance and soon finds himself hungry and living as a pig herder. He thinks of his home and his dad, knowing that the workers there are treated better than he is in his current situation. So, the son decides to head home to  ask if he can work as a servant for his father.

Imagine his amazement at being greeted by his father, running down the road and wrapping his arms around his lost son and surrounding him with love. His father did not hold the choices he had made against him but embraced his lost son who had returned home. He was so thankful that he organised a feast to celebrate.

The heavenly meaning of the story is that God is like the father. We may make choices that are far from pleasing to Him, but His love for us is so great, He is always waiting with His arms wide open to welcome us home. The past is covered over by His love and His joy in His sons and daughters. It is the best feeling to be so loved and accepted. May you know the love of the Father.

Blessings!
