Year 6 News

Reading
During reading sessions the Year 6 students have been learning about what it means to infer. They were asked to create speech bubbles and write what they think a character is trying to convey. This skill was further developed when students were asked to create comic strips later in the week. Students had to tell a story that conveys emotions to communicate their ideas through text and visuals.
Writing
Our Year 6 students have been very busy completing and publishing their narrative stories. Students were able to use CANVA AI to create a digital image as a writing prompt and then use this to plan,
“I had fun making my comic strip about a broken ice cream machine monster” - Nia 6E
“Trying to not add any words was hard, but I got there in the end.” - Alexis 6A
“It was fun creating them and guessing our partners story” - Ivy 6A draft and publish a narrative story. Our students have created some incredibly imaginative stories and displayed their skills following the writing process
More recently, the students have begun exploring Persuasive Writing, investigating the different devices, features and structures of a persuasive text. This included a whole class debate on the topic “Should video games be considered a sport?” This certainly divided opinions, but the students did a great job at utilising persuasive devices to clearly make their point. An amazing effort by all. Well done. We are all looking forward to seeing more of our students utilising their new knowledge they have gained in persuasive techniques.
“It was fun to create our own picture image for our writing prompt” - Ivy 6A
“ I liked using Cava AI because i was able to explore and make things come true” - Murad 6A
“ Using canva AI was really creative” - Edmelyn 6A
Maths
For maths, our Year 6 students have recently completed their learning unit on graphs and data. We learned about ‘misleading graphs’ where data is graphed inaccurately to visually trick you into reaching a specific conclusion. Often a false one. The students enjoyed making their own bar graphs, line graphs and summarising what the data shows. The Year 6’s are now beginning their learning unit on measurement and space. This covers learning areas such as; 2D shapes, irregular shapes, 3D shapes, angles and tessellation. Check out some of the pictures of student work from the past two weeks below. We hope you were as impressed as we were!
“Graphs have been fun to learn about because it helps us understand how to display data” - Khloe 6E
“ Pyramids have a point at the top and prisms do not” - Jagman 6E
“ Sometimes companies mislead graphs to make us think their product is better” - Nia 6E
“Line graphs were fun to make.” - Sila 6B
“Colour coding my bar graphs helped me display the data.” - Livreet 6B
Inquiry
Over the past two weeks, Year 6 students have been investigating the effects of the Sun and Moon on Earth, and their findings reveal just how important these two celestial bodies are. Starting with the question, “What do the Sun and Moon actually do?”, students discovered that the Sun provides light, warmth, and is responsible for Earth’s seasons, influencing everything from weather patterns to the length of our days. The Moon, on the other hand, plays a major role in controlling the tides through its gravitational pull. Together, the Sun and Moon have a powerful impact on life on Earth, shaping natural rhythms and environmental changes.
“ I liked learning about king tides” - Layth 6E
“The is 91% Hydrogen and the core is 15 million degrees” - Onel 6D
“Something new that I learnt was the gravitational force formed the sun at the centre of our solar system” - Bonnie 6D
“It was interesting to learn that the sun's core can reach 15 million degrees celsius” - Ivy 6A
“Space is my favourite topic to learn about for inquiry.” - Guransh 6B
Social and Emotional Learning
These past two weeks, in SEL Grade 6 students explored what it means to ask for help and the personal strengths it requires—such as trust, courage, empathy, and independence. We discussed how to recognise when a problem can be solved independently and when it’s best to seek help from a peer or trusted adult.
Students reflected on real-life situations and learned that asking for help isn’t a weakness, it’s a skill. They considered emotional signals like stress or negative self-talk and explored how strong relationships make it easier to reach out.
We also discussed a scenario: “You’re stuck on a school project but feel afraid to ask a friend in case they think you didn’t try hard enough.” This led to rich conversations about self-doubt, fear of judgement, and how trusting relationships make help-seeking easier.
We explored how these skills will be helpful when confronting new situations in High School, and how we can navigate them. We explored practical helpful tips and ways to make day-to-day high school life easier. In this session the students discussed things that they were nervous, excited and curious about transitioning to high school.
To bring this learning to life, students participated in a blindfold partner activity, where they practised giving and receiving guidance—building communication, empathy, and trust in a hands-on way.
These skills are vital for emotional wellbeing and resilience, and we’re proud of how openly and thoughtfully our Grade 6 students engaged with this topic.
“I am excited to do food tech at high school” - Rami 6E“Everyone needs help sometimes, it's important to ask trusted friends or adults” - Samhara 6E
“I look forward to making lots of new friends in high school” Maya and Jah-Highness 6B
Special Events
Our Year 6 students have definitely been busy with many school events over the last two weeks.
Please see below for some of our highlights.
Education week - To celebrate education week at CPS, this year's theme, Celebration of Cultures, celebrates the rich diversity of cultures and emphasises the importance of every child feeling safe, valued, and welcomed at school. The Year 6’s engaged in reading ‘Whoever you are’ by Mem Fox and celebrating our many different backgrounds. Students will then created their own picture frame of their culture. This picture frame was to celebrate an event or celebration that is important to them eg. Diwali, Eid, Easter, Christmas, lantern festival, chinese new year, ANZAC Day, Holi St. Patrick's Day or Carnival. The class then created their own ‘Whoever we are’ book to use when we talk about and celebrate other cultural celebrations from our community. Which frame is your favourite?
We would also like to thank our families for coming in to spend some time with us and learn about other cultures within our community.
“It was fun showing my parents what we do during class” - Layla 6A
“ It was great to show my mum how I work in class” - Alexis 6A“ It was interesting to see all the different celebrations that happen in our class” - Lachlan 6E
Reconciliation Week - Last week ‘Sorry Day’ marked the beginning of National Reconciliation Week. During this week Year 6 students learnt about shared histories, culture, achievements and how we can all contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year's theme “Now More Than Ever” reminds all of us that we need to show bravery, respect and take action. We encourage families to continue these important conversations at home. Let’s walk together towards a more just, equitable, and reconciled Australia. ❤️🖤💛
Please have a read of some of our poems that the grade 6 students would like to share about their learning.
