Year 4 News

Reading
Our students have been thoroughly enjoying Charlotte’s Web as we continue reading through the story together. We've been focusing on key reading strategies such as summarising, visualising, identifying the author’s purpose, and expanding our vocabulary. Alongside our reading, students have engaged in fun extension activities like word searches to deepen their understanding. We've had some fantastic discussions about each chapter, with students sharing their personal thoughts and reviews. We’re all excited to see what unfolds next in Charlotte’s Web in the coming weeks!
Writing
PoetryWords dance on my page,
Thoughts turn into poetry,
I find my own voice.
This week in writing classes, our students have been diving into the world of poetry! From haikus to free verse to acrostics, they've been exploring the power of language, rhythm, and imagery to express their thoughts, emotions, and creativity. It's been inspiring to see their unique voices come alive through their writing, and many have discovered a newfound love for poetic expression.
Maths
Over the past two weeks, our Year 4 students have been diving into the world of data and statistics! We've been learning how to collect and organize data, ask meaningful questions, and present our findings in clear and creative ways. Students explored different types of graphs—including pictographs, bar graphs, pie charts and double bar graphs—to help them visually interpret information. We've also been using digital tools to create graphs and analyze results, making math both interactive and fun. Ask your child what kind of data they collected and how they chose to represent it!
Inquiry
In Year 4, students have been exploring how day and night occur on Earth. Through engaging diagrams and videos, they have developed a deeper understanding of how our planet rotates on its axis—facing the sun during the day and turning away from it at night. We've had lots of fun with creative activities, including writing emails as astronauts to mission control, describing what they observed in space. Students also collaborated in groups to create informative posters explaining how day and night work.
To extend our learning, we’ve also been investigating the fascinating connection between the Earth, sun, and moon. It’s been an exciting journey of discovery and discussion!
Social and Emotional Learning
Sorry Day
On May 26, our school community acknowledged National Sorry Day — a significant day in Australia’s history. It’s a time to remember and reflect on the experiences of the Stolen Generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families. Through classroom discussions, stories, and activities, students are learning about the importance of truth-telling, reconciliation, and respect for First Nations peoples and cultures. Together, we honour the past and look toward a future built on understanding and healing.
AUSLAN
Our students have recently embarked on an exciting journey into Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN), focusing on learning the signs for colours and the alphabet. Through engaging activities and resources, they've explored the signs for various colours, enhancing their vocabulary and understanding of visual language. Additionally, they've delved into the AUSLAN alphabet, learning to spell out words and names, fostering both communication skills and inclusivity.
