Year 3 News

Reading
The Year 3 have been busy continuing to learn about non-fiction texts and their important parts. They have been working on finding and understanding different features like headings, subheadings, labels, diagrams, photographs, captions, bold words and glossaries. These features help them find information and learn new things more easily.
On Wednesday, May 21st the Year 3's took part in National Simultaneous Storytime. They joined children all around Australia to read “The Truck Cat” at the same time. It was a fun and exciting way to enjoy reading together.
Here’s what the Year 3 had to say about their experience:
“I liked how the cat in The Truck Cat went to different places.” - Olivia 3A
“The cat was very cute.” - Pouniu 3A
“I remember doing National Simultaneous Storytime last year when we read the story about the bluebird.” - Nabil 3A
Writing
In Writing this fortnight, the Year 3 students continued to learn about Information Reports.
It has been so great to see the Year 3’s become more confident in finding information in texts, using a plan to organise information, then write a draft using the plan they wrote and then edit and revise their work before starting on their final copy.
Students have begun to write their final copy using Word on laptops.
During the lessons, students were taught how to change the layout of a Word document, how to change the font style and size and how to center text on a document.
During the Writing lessons, you can see how proud the students are when they are furthering their understanding on how to use Microsoft Word and their eagerness to help their peers when needed.
“I know how to change the layout, I can help you.” - Syona 3C
Maths
Over the past few weeks, Year 3 students have been learning about the different ways in which we can measure objects: length, mass, and capacity. These lessons followed a formula that became familiar: after each lesson, students would estimate the size of objects around the classroom or playground, and measure them to determine how accurate their estimations were.
Students measured length in centimetres and metres. If they had mastered both of those units, they could measure objects in millimetres or use decimals to represent metres. We used rulers, metre sticks, and even trundle wheels on the playground. When students learned about mass, we measured objects in grams and kilograms using scales. Students measured capacity using various vessels to measure liquid.
“Measuring and weighing is fun, but hard!” - Neerav
“I learned a lot of things” - Nina
“We got to measure a lot of things, and it was super fun” - Rohaan
Inquiry
In Inquiry last week, the Year 3 students deepened their understanding about the relationship between The Earth, Moon and Sun. Students engaged in discussions and investigated diagrams that explained the connection. The students had the task of creating a poster that showcased their understanding of this very important relationship of The Earth, Moon and Sun.
The Year 3 students had the option of creating a 3D poster with torn up coloured paper.
You could see that the students were really engaged during these lessons and showed great teamwork too.
“Me and my group are using all the colours!” - Grace 3C
“Huseyin is drawing the stars and I am colouring in the background.” - Manasseh 3C
Social and Emotional Learning
Sorry Day
May 27th was Sorry Day at CPS. On this day, Year 3 students recognised and commemorated the Stolen Generation and those affected by the residential school system by created pieces of art. Year 3 traced their hands on pieces of paper and cut them out. After, we decorated them with art that represents the Indigenous Australian and Torres Strait Islander identity, such as the flags of their communities, and dot art.
Special Event
On Wednesday, 28th May, our Year 3 students were brimming with excitement as they visited the Melbourne Scienceworks Planetarium for an unforgettable excursion. This hands-on experience brought their learning about our solar system to life, connecting what they’ve been studying in the classroom with real-world scientific exploration. The trip was a wonderful opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the wonders of space and deepen their understanding of the solar system.
One of the highlights of the day was the captivating hologram experience, where students learned about the fascinating impact of the Earth’s axial tilt on our seasons. The interactive displays and engaging presentations sparked plenty of curiosity and thoughtful questions from our young explorers. The excitement from the day has carried back to the classroom, and our students are already eager to continue their learning journey about the planets, stars, and the amazing universe we call home!
Open Morning
The Year 3 classrooms were full of smiles and excitement during our recent Open Morning on Thursday, May 22nd. Families were invited to come and see all the wonderful learning that has been happening in our classrooms.
As part of Education Week, Year 3 students were exploring native animals from around the world.
Students proudly shared their work and explained what they have been currently learning about. It was a great chance for parents and carers to see how confident and engaged the students are in their learning.
Thank you to all the families who came along and helped make the morning so special. The Year 3 Students loved having you there!
