Reading

During Reading, Foundation students explored how punctuation helps us read with expression and understanding. They played a fun punctuation game, practised reading with different voices, and discovered how punctuation like full stops and exclamation marks guide how we read. As part of National Simultaneous Storytime, students enjoyed "The Truck Cat" and crafting their own paper cats to put together in a story. The Foundation students also focused on responding to a variety of stories by sharing their thoughts, favourite parts, and how the stories made them feel.

Writing

Students have been learning about the key features of narrative writing. They dived into discussing characters, the setting, the problem, and solution, and what these elements are in a story. Students engaged with Pixar and Disney short films such as Lifted and Partly Cloudy to identify and discuss these narrative components, helping them understand how stories are structured. They have also explored story images, using clues to imagine what might be happening and create our own story ideas.

Maths

During Mathematics, Foundation students learned about 2D shapes. They explored shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles, and described them based on their sides and corners. Through fun activities like shape hunts and sorting games, students learned where these shapes appear in everyday life. The Foundation Cohort have also been working on repeating patterns. They first began with an ABAB pattern where students repeated patterns with two different colours. They then built onto ABCABC patterns where they explored repeated patterns such as circle-square-triangle.

Inquiry

This week in Inquiry, Foundation students explored the question, “What do animals need?”. They read What Does My Dog Need? to learn that all animals need air, water, food, and shelter to survive. As a class, they listed pets they own or would like to own, gathered data, and discussed who is responsible for their care. Foundation students have also talked about what animal babies need and which animal might be the harder to look after, a seal or a llama.

Social and Emotional Learning

In social and emotional learning, students continued to build their understanding of problems and that there are always ways to solve them. They shared our own experiences with everyday problems and learned how staying calm helps us find better solutions. As a class, they discussed a scenario where milk was spilled at snack time and worked together to come up with safe and helpful responses to the problem. Students practised identifying problems, naming them, and thinking through positive ways to handle them.

Special Event - Reconciliation Week

This week, Foundation students took part in Reconciliation Week. They have been learning about the importance of respect, understanding, and connection between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and all Australians. Students listened to stories that celebrate First Nations culture and talked about ways we can show kindness, fairness, and inclusion every day. Through class discussions and creative activities, students also explored the Indigenous flag, identifying what each colour represents. Students also drew a picture that shows what reconciliation means to them.
