Performing Arts

Foundation
Foundation students explored The Gingerbread Man by acting out scenes with a focus on movements and emotions to portray characters. Through group role-play, they re-enacted key moments and expressed feelings such as determination, fear and excitement. Students also explored Possum Magic by creating sound effects using voices, bodies, objects and instruments to enhance storytelling. They reflected on how these sounds made the story more engaging and supported their understanding of the characters and events.
Maria (FB): “The Gingerbread got eaten by the fox. I liked acting”
Jenan (FB): “I liked cooking the Gingerbread Man”
Yakeen (FB): “I liked the way the Gingerbread Man says run, run as fast as you can”
Year 1-2
Students explored puppetry and experimented with bringing hand puppets to life by creating unique characters using voice and hand movements. They reflected on the challenges of matching movement and voice to character and shared their work by introducing their puppets to the class. Students also explored shadow puppetry, learning how to use light and shadow techniques to manipulate puppets and tell a story. In small groups, they selected a fairytale, identified key characters, and designed a shadow puppet to represent one. They reflected on how the puppets' movements could express character traits and emotions, and discussed how puppetry can enhance storytelling.
Jordan (1C): “That we learnt how to introduce puppets”
Hudson (1C): “We were learning how to make our puppets talk”
Nahum (1B): : “We made our puppets talk and say what they liked to do”
Alana (1B): “We were taking turns to introduce our puppets by changing our voice”
Tyson (1B): “I made a name and character for my puppet”
Year 3-4
Students were introduced to bucket drumming, learning correct stick grip, basic playing positions and how striking different parts of the bucket produced varying pitches. They practised simple rhythms using quarter, half and whole notes and used word syllables to support their understanding of note values. Through engaging play-along activities, they developed a sense of beat and tempo. As their skills progressed, students explored more complex rhythms with eighth notes and rests, followed rhythm notation and experimented with dynamics by playing softly (piano) and loudly (forte) in time with upbeat music.
Nina (3B): “I learned new rhythms and played them on the bucket drums”
Noah (3B): “I didn’t only learn new rhythms, I also learned the things about bucket drums that were so good and it really showed me what it means to work”
Sia (3B): “We had so much fun in bucket drumming and we learned new things”
Hayley (3B): “I didn’t know I could play the bucket drums because there were different positions”

Guntaj (3B): “I learned how to play the bucket drums and rhythms and different notes”
Aidan (3B): “I learned how to play the drums and I learned new sounds”

Some of the students caught up on their drama performances, acting out scenes from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!’
Year 5-6
Students learned about a variety of musical symbols, including crotchets, minims, semibreves, quavers, time signatures and rests. They practised reading and playing rhythms using these symbols and percussion instruments, creating and performing their own compositions in 4/4 time.
Students explored various fitness dance styles, including Zumba, Hip-Hop, Aerobics and Yoga, and worked in groups to create short instructional dance videos. They broke down their routines into counts, using clear and simple movements aligned with a chosen fitness theme. As they rehearsed, refined and recorded their routines, students focused on rhythm, energy and body control, ensuring their instructional delivery was easy to follow.
Nia (6E): “We learned about half notes and more about rhythm”
Noah (6E): We learned how to play notes and how to make them sound better with each other and it was fun”
Jorja (6E): “We earned how to pay different notes and how long each one was”
