Grade Five

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY

As we returned for Term 2, we were honoured to take part in our ANZAC Day Ceremony — a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country with courage and dedication. Congratulations to our Grade 6 Leaders for delivering a meaningful and inspiring service, and to the school choir for their moving performance of the national anthems.

HISTORICAL NARRATIVES

Grade 5s have been enjoying learning about historical events for our historical narrative unit. They have conducted extensive research and made notes and are now turning their knowledge into narratives. Popular topics have been: The Titanic, Apollo 11, The First Fleet and the climbing of Everest.

Here is a sample from a historical narrative written by Keesha in Grade 5.

269 metres long, weighing 52,310 tons and known as the unsinkable ship, it was the massive Titanic and I was the captain. Creak! My things on the ground slid across my cabin, what was happening?

“There is an object ahead!” I heard the panicked yell and recognised the voice instantly. I ran to the lookout as quickly as I could. I was in charge of this ship, I needed to know what was happening.

FRACTIONS & DECIMALS

This term in Mathematics, our Grade 5 students have been deepening their understanding of fractions and decimals. They have been learning to compare, order, and place them accurately on number lines, as well as adding and subtracting fractions with increasing confidence. By exploring what fractions and decimals truly represent, students have gained valuable insights into the connection between the two.

To celebrate their learning, we asked a few of our budding mathematicians in 5LK and 5LH to share some of their highlights from the term. Here’s what they had to say:

Isla said: I really enjoyed learning how fractions, decimals and percentages are all connected and can be matched together.

Alishba said: I liked exploring the different fractions and how to compare them to see if they are bigger or smaller than each other.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Our Integrated Studies unit on Social Justice has been of great interest to our students. The students have been developing an understanding of what rights children around the world are entitled to while investigating the Convention of the Rights of the Child. Students have also identified where these rights are not being met around the world. This has given a greater appreciation for the privileged life most people enjoy in Australia.

ACTIVE APRIL

Active April has recently come to an end, and what a fantastic way it was to kick-start our school days! The Grade 5 teachers thoroughly enjoyed heading out to the oval each morning and seeing students enthusiastically running laps. We are incredibly proud of the way our students embraced the challenge, setting personal goals and showing great determination to achieve them. Their commitment and energy each morning truly set a positive tone for the day ahead.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

On Tuesday 6th May, a group of Grade 5 students proudly represented Oatlands at the District Cross Country. The dedication and training they put in beforehand truly paid off, with every student achieving outstanding results. Their determination, resilience, and positive team spirit were evident throughout the day and greatly admired by all in attendance. A special celebration is in order—thanks to the incredible collective effort, the Oatlands Cross Country Team secured an impressive 2nd place overall! We’re also thrilled to have some students advancing to the Division Cross Country. We wish them the very best as they take on the next stage of their journey. Go Oatlands!
