This term we have launched a program in the library to support students to create displays of books that align with their interests. The students can decorate the display how they like and I assist them with locating books relevant to their display.
Below are the latest three displays from some of the Stage 2 students, and there are many more scheduled in for this term! Any students in the school are welcome to do a display, there are forms in the library or they can speak to me directly about their ideas.
For this newsletter I'd like to share from our Kindy library lessons. We have been reading the shortlisted books for the CBCA Book of the Year Awards in the Early Childhood category. This week we read a book based on an amazing true story, "How to Move a Zoo" by Kate Simpson and Owen Swan (illus.). This book tells the story of the transportation of zoo animals through the Sydney streets and over the harbour by ferry to Taronga Zoo in 1916. It focuses on the journey of the elephant, who couldn't be transported by truck and was allowed to journey to the ferry on foot through the streets.
We have had some great books in the shortlist for our discussions around fiction and non-fiction texts this term. "How to Move a Zoo" is a fictional story based on true events, compared with "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Tooth Fairy (And Some Things You Didn't)" by Briony Stewart which is written like a non-fiction information book but is about an (arguably) fictional subject. The Kindys felt sure that both books are non-fiction; rest assured I have crushed no tooth fairy beliefs! We focused on the features of the text that make it read like a non-fiction book instead of arguing about the classification.
After reading "How to Move a Zoo" this week, each child was given a zoo animal to cut out and stick onto their class' convoy of vehicles.
For families entering books directly into student accounts, please see previous newsletters for instructions.
If you are unable to access the online system, you can download and print off a Personal Reading Log. Once it is complete, please drop into the library and I will enter in for the students. While I am happy to do this if families cannot access the online system, please do enter your child's reading records online yourself if you are able to.
Requirements to complete the challenge are below.
I have had some amazing help from parents so far this term, but the books just keep on coming and we'd never say no to more help! So if you are interested in helping with covering new books for the library collection, please fill out this survey and I will be in touch. (Please note, you will need a current Working With Children Check to volunteer in the school library)
