Scott Darlow Incursion
We were excited to welcome Scott Darlow, a proud Yorta Yorta man, musician, and speaker, for a special incursion on Friday afternoon. Scott shared stories, music, and his powerful message of respect to inspire students and deepen their understanding of Indigenous culture. He shared some of his songs with the students and also showed them how to play the 'Yidaki' (didgeridoo).
Parliament Excursion
As you already know the Year 6 students will be attending Parliament and Captain Cook's Cottage as apart of our inquiry unit. The students will be attending across two days.
Friday 6th June - 6GS, 6PA and half of 6GP
Wednesday 11th June - 6KN, 6PS and half of 6GP
Students will be required to meet at Mitcham Station at 8:30 AM, where they will leave with their peers, and be picked up at 3:45 PM by a parent or carer. If you have an alternate arrangement or someone else picking up your child, you must notify your classroom teacher. The students do not require money or a myki, just a packed lunch and water bottle in a small bag along with their full VPS uniform.
Science
For Science, we require plastic 600ml bottles! We will be using these in each of the classes for some upcoming experiments. Please send them to school with your child if you have some rather than throwing them out!
Mobile Phones
This is a friendly reminder that while students are permitted to bring mobile phones to school, they must be switched off and securely stored in the tubs provided in the learning centre upon arrival each morning. Phones are not to be used in the morning when they arrive at school.
There is also a growing number of students using smart watches to contact people. If you need to contact your child during school hours, please do so via the school office.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
Numeracy
Students in Year 6 have been using Cuisenaire rods to investigate different fractions that can make up the parts of a whole amount. The Cuisenaire rods are an old-fashioned, yet highly effective manipulative tool that has worked well in the classroom. In this week’s activity, students designed their own game using the rods and a variety of different fractions that could be used to construct a singular whole amount.
We also introduced Cartesian planes, and the Year 6 students looked into the four quadrants which led to a discussion on coordinates and understanding how to read them.
Writing
This week, the students wrote some amazing persuasive writing pieces. Their focus was to make their writing engaging and hook the reader in! Have a look at some of their writing below.
What are we learning about next week?
Writing - Persuasive writing
Math - Fractions and Cross Sections
Literacy - Author's Style/Etymology
Inquiry - Australia's System of Government
Science - Microorganisms
Wellbeing - Problem Solving (Conflict)
