What a busy couple of weeks we’ve had!
In the Classroom:
Writing:
Our focus this week has been on Word Choice, and the students have been working hard on using the FAAVS strategy (ask them what this is!) to improve their vocabulary and making their sentences even more interesting.
Maths:
Students have started a Maths Investigation where they’re designing their own city. During this investigation, they’ll be demonstrating their understanding of fractions and location. We think we may have some future town planners in our midst!
Inquiry:
This week the students had their first meeting with their Market Day groups and were very excited to start planning their product. Parents, could we ask that you please discuss this with your child and help them organise some time, later in the term, to meet with their friends to make their product? This is a fantastic real-world scenario, where students get to apply their knowledge of budgeting, marketing and profit.
Literacy:
We’ve been digging in deep into Characterisation, to help students describe their characters’ traits, personalities and physical characteristics. We invite parents to do this at home, to help children develop their language around different people in different texts – you could ask what does their character look like, how do they interact with other people, what is their personality, how do they see the world, what are their feelings?
Vartika from 5SD wrote this ...
Claire is a girl who has had a traumatic childhood. She is a bully and has never smiled ONCE. The only thing that makes her happy is her chain boots, given to her by a black cat. She lives in an abandoned house and is friends with the spiders. She despises all colours except black. She also doesn't go to school. She likes to sulk alone in her room and only eats a sad meal of bread and tea. Anyone who ever looks at her chain boots will be in big trouble. Claire won't be happy.
Well done Vartika!
Wellbeing:
We’ve been focusing on activities that encourage Kindness in the classroom, at home, in the school yard and pretty much everywhere! These discussions have also touched on being safe online and how we communicate and interact with others, in a safe and friendly manner. We encourage parents to continue these discussions at home.
Students making kindness jars and writing strips about what they appreciate about their specialist teachers....
Homework:
As well as the usual 4 Mathletics tasks and reading for two hours with at least two sessions read aloud to a parent, students will be researching a Celebration that is interesting to them. Please encourage your child to rehearse their speech with you a few times, before they present to the class.
Homework is due Friday 23rd May.
Science Week at Vermont Primary School
From Monday 23rd to Friday 27th June, Vermont Primary School will be celebrating Science Week. The students will be involved in a range of activities throughout the week. Some of the activities that the students might do are making bouncy balls, creating slime, making an egg that can bounce and more.

Students had the opportunity to try out their footy skills in the AFL clinics this week.
