Year 1

Nikki Lewis (Team Leader), Maddi Fletcher, Nerida Forster & Chantelle Quinn

We’re nearly halfway through the term, and it’s been a busy and exciting time in Grade 1! Last week, students enjoyed a fun football clinic where they had the chance to learn and practise some great new skills. Today, students had a special visit from Scott Darlow, who shared his knowledge and stories about Aboriginal culture. He connected with the students through music, by using his didgeridoo to create different sounds and rhythms and tell stories.

Looking ahead, everyone is eagerly anticipating the start of our swimming program next week—don’t forget to pack those towels and bathers!

Celebrations display wall

In the North Building corridor we are creating a Celebrations display wall. If you have a photo you would like us to put on the display of your child in cultural dress/clothing or taking part in an exciting celebration/tradition, please send it to your child's teacher.

Morning Routine Reminder

Our morning routine sets a positive tone for learning. Each day begins with marking the roll, talking about the day’s events, and settling in with silent reading. These simple routines help students ease into the day feeling calm, prepared, and ready to learn.

To support this smooth start, we ask that students arrive on time and walk into the classroom independently each morning. This small step fosters independence and a growing sense of responsibility. We understand that mornings can sometimes be busy and it’s not always easy—thank you for doing your best to help your child begin the day promptly and with confidence.

If you need to share any information with your child’s teacher, please do so via email or arrange a time to speak before or after school. We appreciate your ongoing support in helping us create a calm and focused start to each day.

Take-home Readers

Take-home readers help your child grow as a reader. Lately, some books have become damaged or not returned. These books are shared, so it’s important to take good care of them. Please remind your child to keep readers in their blue reader folder, and store it safely in their school bag when they are finished reading. This helps protect the book and make sure they come back to school on time. Thank you for helping your child be responsible with their reading.

Grade 1 and 2 Swimming Program - week 5

Grade 1 and 2 students will have swimming lessons every day next week (Monday 19th – Friday 23rd May). Permission forms on Compass have now closed.

On the swimming days, please send your child to school wearing their bathers under their uniform to save time changing when we get to the pool. They will also need a small bag to take to the swimming pool containing:

  • A towel
  • Goggles
  • Underwear for after swimming
  • A swim cap (optional)

We have provided students with small bags for them to use for swimming. They will still need to take their school bags to school as usual each day. Please make sure everything is clearly named! Lost items can only be returned if they are labelled. After swimming each night please ensure to empty bags and clean and dry towels and bathers so they are fresh for the next day.

Independence

Swimming helps students with water safety, swimming skills, and independence. Students will have the best experience if they can:

  • Dry and dress themselves after swimming
  • Pack their own swimming bag and know their items (e.g. towel and goggle colour)
  • Keep track of all their belongings

Parent Helper Reminder

Parent helpers are required to arrive at Vermont Primary School 5–10 minutes before departure, sign in/out at the office, and wear a lanyard with their WWCC (available at the office).

If you're not rostered to assist or do not have a WWCC, you can still come separately to watch, but you cannot help at the pool or in the change rooms.

We would like to request that anyone who attends the pool to watch swimming lessons please be considerate of student privacy. If you intend to take photos, videos, or digital images, they should only be of your child. Please do not upload pictures of any other child to social media or reproduce or publish for any purpose without the permission of those children's legal guardians.
