K/1 students have settled back into classroom routines with enthusiasm as we begin an exciting Term 2.
This term, our main focus in literacy is on developing students' reading skills. They are continuing to learn new sounds and sight words to support both reading and writing. In writing, students have been exploring narratives and using their imaginations to create fun and exciting stories. Each Monday, they have also been writing recounts of their weekends to help build confidence and fluency in writing.
In numeracy, K/1 students have been working on addition and subtraction, with a focus on learning their ‘friends of ten’—pairs of numbers that make ten—to support mental math skills. They also learnt about area through fun, hands-on activities, and enjoyed using the catchy phrase ‘no gaps or overlaps’ to help them remember how to measure accurately. Last week, they started comparing objects by weight, thinking about and feeling what makes something heavy or light. This week, they will begin to look at telling the time.
In Science this term, K/1 are focusing on the Living World. They have been learning about what makes something living. To explore this further, students went on a nature walk around the school and observed the living things they could see. They then completed a fun art activity called ‘Catching Critters’, which they really enjoyed.
The Brumbies Clinic was an exciting experience for the K/1 students—they loved learning new skills and playing fun games to put these skills into action.
