Supporting the wellbeing of our Essendon Primary School community
We’re excited to share some big news – this week we are officially launching our updated School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) Matrix!
On Monday morning students were introduced to our new colourful matrix, which has been under development since last year. Classes started by learning about the purpose of each section of this poster, as consistent use of the matrix vocabulary is fundamental to successfully implementing the SWPBS framework. Printed versions of our matrix can now be found in each classroom to help with familiarisation, at a height that makes it highly visibly for children. Over the next 5 weeks, students will briefly look at each behaviour statement during Morning Circles, one setting at a time, prior to more extensive lessons in Term 3.
A copy of the introductory information shared with classes can be accessed at the bottom of this page, for Lower Primary (Foundation-Year 2) and Upper Primary (Years 3-6).
🎯 Why it matters: SWPBS framework helps create a consistent, safe and positive school environment for every student. By clearly teaching and recognising positive behaviours, we are not only supporting wellbeing and learning, but also strengthening the sense of school culture. Our matrix is designed to bring our values to life in every area of the community. Grounded in our motto, 'Follow the Gleam', the matrix clearly outlines what our five Gleam look like in action:
Each value is now supported by specific behaviours that guide how students can make positive choices anytime, anywhere in the school. Along with positive behaviours we always expect to see, everywhere, we have identified certain expectations for specifically named settings — learning spaces (in the classroom), play spaces (out in the yard), taps and toilet spaces (near wet areas), and community spaces - shared, office, public (e.g. learning libraries, assemblie, excursion, camps).
During the remainder of Term 2, our SWPBS Professional Learning Community (PLC) will be preparing for our Term 3 Curriculum Day, when all staff will come together to share ideas, strategies, and resources to create lessons focused on unpacking each of the expected behaviour statements. Utilizing the first day of next term for collaboration will ensure that staff have a shared understanding and knowledge of the teaching that is to take place with students.
We encourage you to ask your child about our matrix as the term progresses, welcoming any feedback that might assist with our future work.
If you would like further information, have feedback to share or are seeking answers to any questions please get in touch with one of the SWPBS PLC key contacts: Mary Fazzari (Assistant Principal), Lauren Barry (Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader), Brittany Soutter (SWPBS Team Leader).
