3/4 Learning Community

Welcome to Term 2 in the 3/4 Learning Community
We are excited about all the things we have been learning about this term.
Literacy:
Hi, my name is Joanna. This term we have been doing a new novel study. The novel is called Uncle Xbox. Uncle Xbox is about a Aboriginal boy called Dusty. Dusty lives with his mum called Kathy, and his sister Mary. Dusty, Had a dad but then left and then Dusty got a stepdad called Marcus but then he left. Then his Uncle Rick came and told him that it’s not all about technology, you should learn to love and play with the country. Dusty has learnt to love the country, he was watching the waves and he started to love the country. Uncle rick taught Dusty how to surf. We have also learnt about phonemes, graphemes, and compound words. We also have been learning about: Who, What, When, and how in sentences to make them really great.
We are putting together a factual writing piece using our notes from Inquiry research on the first fleet. We have written the introduction and giving our writing a title.
Thanks for reading - Joanna, 3/4A
Maths:
In maths we've been doing arrays to help us to solve multiplication and division problems like 5 times 12 = 60 and 12 x 5 = 60 and 60 divided by 5 = 12 and 60 divided by 12 = 5. Some of us have been solving worded problems with lots of steps!
We are now doing fractions. We are learning about numerators and denominators, fractions of a whole and of a collection. And we are doing fraction problem solving using a fractions wall!

Inquiry:
This term in Inquiry we have been learning about the First Fleet, the First Nations people, Captain James Cook and we have been taking some notes about a lot of interesting things about the past. The First Fleet had eleven boats full of convicts and settlers that came to Australia led by Captain Arthur Phillips. When the boats landed in Australia, Aboriginal people were wary. When colonisation happened, a lot of things changed for Aboriginal and their culture. We made wanted posters for convicts, and read a book called Rabbits by Sean Tan and John Marsden.
Thank you for reading - By Polly 3/4A.
Wellbeing:
In the Resilience Project we have been learning about not having too much screen time and having twenty to thirty minutes a day. We learnt that some screen time can be good when it's for building skills like play coding games, educational games, typing games, but getting outside and playing is very good for our brains and bodies.
We talked about things that are important to us outside of screen time, we listed; family time, playing with our friends, board games and other special hobbies we enjoy.
Some of the negatives of too much screen time were:
- Bad for your eyes.
- It has a blue screen/light so it makes you not sleep.
- Sometimes it can make emotions intense like anger.
