FARM

This week on Farm we have had some fantastic classification results with Dairy, a 7-year-old cow Logue Doorman 1810 classified EX 90 which is a great score out of a possible 100 points, along with our future first calvers scoring well also.

Ex-student Willow Williamson from DPIRD visited the College during the week working with UWA and Murdoch University on a 5 year pasture trial on one of our Horticulture blocks.

Seeding program is still underway with some afterhours training with keen students and staff willing to put in the time and effort to get the job done.  Students get the opportunity to operate a seed drill fitted with GPS auto steer plus calibration of seed rates, speed tiller, paddock roller and pasture harrows. Thanks Mr Lawrence and Mr Jolly for volunteering in up coming weeks .

Farmwest have been on site to go over the AI program and bull selection with students. Students will have multiple opportunities to be involved in the program, with four groups of AI to be done. Our heifers and maidens will receive two rounds of AI and older cows one round and followed up by back up bulls.

The feedlot cattle at Beef have been weighed again this week with some good daily weight gains and feed conversion, highlighting different breeds of dairy cross compared to pure bred both steers and heifers in trial.

Over the past few weeks all Year 10 students and new Year 11 students have completed the one day Provide First Aid Course. There is an online knowledge component that students must complete prior to the course or within 30 days of the completion of the practical section. Some students have had issues navigating this platform and it is a reminder to all of us that we need to come to terms with how organisations operate with online platforms and learning or inductions such as this.

During the practical course students were trained and assessed in CPR, anaphylactic treatments, snake bites, fractures and emergency responses to scenario situations. The Provide First Aid Qualification is current for three years (CPR component – one year), a favourable qualification that students will be able to list this on their resumes.

We welcome back Mr Adams from long service leave and he has hit the ground running, vaccinating and drenching as well as lambing. We also welcome Ms Necia Watson who will be helping us out in all areas across the Farm when required.

At the Piggery we have been weighing and vaccinating with great daily weight gains recorded.

Horticulture have been busy picking pumpkins and Mr Morris has been doing a great job helping with the hothouse and shade house repairs.

Clean up around the Farm is in full swing, as we get ready for Open Day with all sections preparing to showcase the College on Saturday the 24th of May.

Now all we need is some rain………
