Preps

We have had a very busy start to the term with lots of exciting learning happening in our classroom!

In Writing, students have been using pictures to help create their own sentences. We have been working hard to remember our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces to make our writing clear and easy to read. It has been wonderful to see students growing in confidence as independent writers.

In Reading, our one-on-one reading sessions have continued to benefit everyone. I am noticing so much growth in students’ confidence and skills, and the excitement around reading is definitely increasing. One of the highlights has been hearing some students quietly say, “Yay, I love reading!” which has been so lovely to hear.

In Maths, we have been exploring measurement by using informal units such as Unifix blocks, counters, teddies and other classroom objects to measure the length of different items. Students have also been comparing, sorting and ordering objects from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. We have been very hands-on in maths over the last couple of weeks, which has helped students build their understanding through play and exploration.

We have also been learning how to use tens frames. Students are now confidently representing numbers, noticing different number patterns and using these patterns to make counting quicker and support their subitising skills.

In Wellbeing, we have been discussing respect and the different ways we can show respect to others both inside and outside of the classroom. We also read the picture story book My Mouth Is a Volcano! to help us think about listening carefully, waiting our turn and keeping our classroom calm and quiet so everyone has the chance to think independently about their answers.

Our Buddy sessions this term have a new focus on maths games. In our first week, students participated in a head-to-head challenge with another team to see who could make 10 the quickest. This eventually turned into a knockout competition, with two teams battling it out in the final round! While there were many maths skills being practised, it was also fantastic to see so much encouragement, teamwork and cheering for other teams throughout the games.
