Week 1, Term 1

Visual Arts

Welcome to 2026!

In the classroom this week...

All students will be revisiting what it means to work well in the art room—respecting our space, our equipment, and each other. They’ll also be exploring this term’s Big Idea of Community as they help create a collaborative display for the foyer. Using coloured paper, students will design and build a 3D house, adding cut-out windows and doors and adding finishing touches with Sharpie markers.

Donations Welcome!

The Artroom gladly collects donations throughout the year to resource different projects that are happening. Please look out in the Wonga Weekly for items that we are in need of at particular times. If you have something to donate that hasn't been mentioned but you think would be helpful, please email the office to let me know and I will get back to you. Any donations can be dropped off at the office.

Young Archie Portrait Competition – Get Creative at Home!

Looking for a fun artistic challenge? Families are invited to participate in the Young Archie Portrait Competition — a wonderful opportunity for kids to create a portrait of someone special and enter it in their own time! The competition is run by the Art Gallery of New South Wales and celebrates young creativity across Australia.

What it’s all about:

  • Open to young artists aged 5–18, with four age categories.
  • Portraits should be of someone the artist knows and who plays a meaningful role in their life (like a family member, friend or mentor).
  • One artwork per entrant, created on paper (A4 to A3), unframed and unmounted. You can use paint, pencils, pastels, collage — whatever inspires you!

Important: This is a family-led and out-of-school activity — the school will not be submitting entries on your behalf. If your child chooses to enter, you’ll submit directly to the Art Gallery following the official entry instructions.

Key 2026 dates:

Whether it’s a thoughtful sketch or a bold painting, we hope lots of our young artists enjoy giving it a go — happy creating!

Thankyou so much, looking forward to a fabulous term in Art!

Auslan

Welcome!

In Auslan this week, students will be introduced to their new Auslan teacher and participate in some getting-to-know-you activities. We will discuss our Auslan class expectations, including voices off or quiet, maintaining visual attention, turn-taking, and respect for the Auslan language and Deaf culture. We are also practicing our fingerspelling and going over the Auslan alphabet, as well as refreshing our memories of familiar signs through games like Simon Says. Students are then asking each other simple questions and sharing information about their classmates!

Performing Arts

We are looking forward to another exciting and busy year in Performing Arts during 2026! More details about our program will be provided over the coming weeks.

VICTORIAN STATE SCHOOL SPECTACULAR

Grade 5 and 6 Students

Information was sent to families at the end of last year and today about this opportunity. Expressions of Interest are due this Friday 30 January via this form. Further information is on the form.

IN THE CLASSROOM

All students will take part in Performing Arts lessons focused on building connection, confidence and classroom routines. Through music, drama and dance, students will get to know one another, practise working together, play games, sing songs and learn safe and respectful ways to participate in Performing Arts. These lessons support our school’s CBL Big Idea of 'Community' and help set a positive tone for the year ahead.
