Wellbeing

As we begin a new school year, I would like to warmly welcome families to our school community and introduce myself. My name is Liz Penny, and I am looking forward to working in partnership with you in my role as Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader.
This role is new to Wonga Park Primary School and focuses on supporting student wellbeing across the whole school. I work closely with teachers and school leaders to strengthen wellbeing practices, support early intervention and prevention, and help students develop important life skills such as emotional regulation, resilience and positive social behaviours in age-appropriate ways.
While this role does not provide counselling or clinical mental health support, it plays an important role in supporting student wellbeing and helping connect families with appropriate supports when needed. Working together with families is a key part of this role.
Returning to School:
Prioritising Wellbeing for a Positive Start
Returning to school brings excitement, new learning and opportunities for connection. For some children, however, adjusting back to routines after the holidays can feel challenging. Supporting wellbeing early helps children feel safe, settled and ready to learn.
Simple ways families can support wellbeing
- Create consistent routines for sleep, meals, learning and downtime. Predictable routines help children feel secure and reduce anxiety, particularly in the first weeks back at school.
- Support calm moments through simple strategies such as breathing, quiet reflection or short movement breaks. These help children regulate emotions and reset when feelings feel big.
- Keep communication open about school worries or feelings. Regular check-ins and listening without judgement help children feel supported and understood.
- Encourage healthy habits including good sleep, balanced nutrition and regular physical activity, which all play an important role in learning and wellbeing.
- Set realistic expectations and celebrate effort and progress rather than perfection. Every child adjusts at their own pace, and small successes matter.
- Seek support early if your child is finding things challenging. The school wellbeing team is here to help, and early support can make a positive difference.
By prioritising wellbeing and working together, we can support every child to have a positive and confident start to the school year.
Here’s to a caring and successful year ahead!
