Religious Education

Jesus the Teacher and Healer.

This unit explores the importance of Jesus’ ministry of teaching and healing. Through Scripture, students explore stories where Jesus taught people how to live their lives modelled on his example. Students will learn how Jesus taught us how to pray and give thanks to God. Students will develop an understanding of how Jesus showed his love for us by reflecting on his life, death and Resurrection.

Holy Week

The Liturgical Year units enable students to explore the traditions, beliefs, Scripture and events celebrated by the Catholic community throughout the Liturgical Year and especially during the time of Advent to Christmas, Lent to Holy Week and Easter to Pentecost.

English

This Term, the students will gain a greater understanding of the textual concepts of narrative and characterisation. Through the study of the text Fantastic Mr Fox, students will explore how narratives set up expectations for the reader using predictable structure and familiar characters and situations. Students will analyse excerpts of the text and use these as the basis for their innovation. Students will also plan, draft and revise a narrative sequel to Fantastic Mr Fox using an orientation, complication and resolution structure.

Mathematics

The students are explicitly taught concepts from the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus. Students will participate in differentiated activities tailored to their individual learning needs. The topics taught in Term 1:

Data

In this unit, students will develop their data literacy skills. They will learn to pose questions based on their own interests, collect information, and record it in categories. Students will also organise and display their data using tables and graphs, utilising relevant software for assistance where appropriate.

Representing Numbers using Place Value

Students will begin to establish the relationship between the place value of digits in various units. Students will learn to group physical or virtual objects to show the structure of tens, hundreds and a thousand. Students will learn to regroup numbers flexibly, compare and describe the relative size of numbers by positioning numbers on a number line and partition numbers using both standard and non-standard form.

Three- Dimensional Spatial Structure

3D Objects

Students will learn how to identify the differences between prisms, pyramids and cylinders and construct them based on their features. They will learn about faces, edges and vertices and also flat surfaces and curved surfaces. By deconstructing everyday packaging students will learn to create nets and investigate the variety of nets that can be used to create a particular prism.

Additive Relations

Students will explore how numbers can be added and subtracted in flexible ways. They will learn how addition and subtraction are connected and use this understanding to solve problems and explain their thinking.

Non Spatial Structure

Students will be given opportunities to estimate, measure and compare the masses of objects using kilograms and grams.

The students will also take part in daily review activities to help consolidate their knowledge and understanding.

Science and Technology

In the unit Grow and Survive, students explore how living things grow, change, and survive. They identify and classify living and non‑living things, and group living things based on their characteristics and external features. Students investigate the life cycle of plants through a hands‑on scientific investigation and study the life cycle of chickens using video footage.

Students learn how life cycles support the survival of species and examine how living things depend on each other and their environment, including pollination and food chains. They explore how agricultural processes help produce food and fibre, comparing traditional and modern technologies using accessible digital tools.

The unit concludes with a STEM Design Challenge, where students design and create a product, system, or environment that supports the growth or survival of a chosen living thing, applying the design process to plan, build, test, and evaluate their solution.

Geography

The Geography unit for this Semester is ‘Places are Similar and Different’. Students examine the natural and human features of Australia and the diverse characteristics of neighbouring countries. They will explore different climates, settlement patterns and demographic characteristics and use this information to imagine what it would be like to live in different places. Students consider how people’s perceptions of places are the basis for action to protect places and environments.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education

During sport this term, students will participate in a range of games and sports with a primary focus on developing their skills and building self-confidence. Throughout the unit, students will have many opportunities to refine their Fundamental Movement Skills and apply them through a variety of activities and rotations. Students will also practise these skills in real game scenarios. The focus of these games is to develop teamwork, communication, strategic thinking, and resilience.

Year Three will explore artmaking practices and protocols of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists to understand how Cultural ideas are expressed.

In Art Appreciation, students will describe how signs and symbols such as objects, words and colours are used to influence meaning in artworks. We will focus on Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and the work of Henri Rousseau.

In Creative Arts with Mr Parlato, Stories, Myths and Legends uses folk tales, fables and other stories as inspiration for learning. Students create, explore and appreciate a range of art forms while continuing to develop their skills in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. This term also marks the introduction of the Amadeus program, where every student begins learning to play a musical instrument with a tutor and performs as part of an ensemble.

Homework

It is recommended that Year 3 students spend up to 30 minutes on homework per day, including at least 15 minutes of reading on four nights each week. Students are required to record their daily reading in their School Diary, which should be brought to school each day as an important communication tool between home and school.

Please ensure your child has completed their homework and that reading has been recorded and checked at home.
