YEAR TWO

In Term 1, students will develop an understanding of Catholic moral teaching and its role in guiding personal decision-making. They will be encouraged to take responsibility for their choices, recognise that moral decisions can be complex and act with compassion and a sense of justice.
The first Religious Education Unit is 'Morality and Justice - Being Loving Disciples'. This unit explores how members of the Church are called to live as disciples of Jesus. Students will learn about Jesus’ New Commandment to love others as He loved us and be introduced to Saints as ordinary people who reflected God’s goodness.
A focus will be placed on the lives of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and St Patrick, as well as how the parish and school community honours and celebrates the Saints. Students will also reflect on how they can use their own gifts to share God’s love and goodness with others. The second Religious Education Unit is 'The Liturgical Year' students will learn about Lent and Holy Week.
In English, Year Two students will develop and consolidate their knowledge of spelling rules. They will apply this knowledge across a range of reading contexts while building reading fluency and comprehension. Students engage in phonics and spelling daily. Students will explore narrative structure using a range of simple, compound and complex sentences.

This term, Year 2 students will engage in a range of learning experiences that progressively increase in complexity and challenge. Tasks will be open-ended and differentiated with clearly defined success criteria and enabling and extending prompts to support all learners. Students will be explicitly taught key concepts from the NSW Mathematics K–2 Syllabus, with a strong emphasis on problem solving, reasoning, communication and conceptual understanding. All learning experiences are differentiated to cater for the diverse needs and abilities of students. The topics covered in Term 1 include Chance and Time, 2D and 3D Spatial Structure, Combining and Separating Quantities, Length and Forming Groups.
In Semester One, students will study Earth and Space with a focus on the 'Land, Water and Sky'. They will observe and investigate changes in the sky and local landscapes and explore how Earth’s resources are used. Students will also examine how plants and people adapt to and protect themselves from seasonal changes.
Through inquiry based learning, students will focus on places within Australia and Australia’s location in the world. They will describe the connections people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, have with places both locally and globally. The students will also identify factors affecting people’s accessibility to places.
Students in Year 2 will engage in a variety of physical activities designed to develop and refine their fundamental movement skills. This will include developing their non-locomotive and locomotive movement skills such as running, hopping, skipping, throwing, catching and kicking. Through individual, group and team-based activities, students will explore how to move their bodies effectively and with confidence.
Students will participate in the 6-week Fit Futures Active Gymnastics program, starting in Week 3 and finishing in Week 9. This program will focus on developing fundamental movement skills (FMS) while applying decision-making and problem-solving strategies to perform movement sequences. Throughout the program, students will build self-awareness and communication skills. They will have the opportunity to use various equipment, including mats, beams, bars and mini trampolines to enhance their gymnastics skills.
Open Parachute will be implemented K-6. Open Parachute aims to provide practical support on mental health to students. The program aims to reduce stigma and generate authentic dialogue in classrooms about the real issues students face. The psychological skills-building exercises aim to increase empathy, self-compassion, self-awareness, mental health literacy and self-efficacy in students.
In Visual Arts, students will engage with the new Unit 'Then and Now'. During this Unit, we will explore how objects have been depicted throughout the ages from Ancient Times to the Modern Day. Students will use a variety of art materials throughout the term, such as clay, oil pastels, watercolour paint, collage, printing and more.
In Creative Arts with Mr Parlato, students learn about Music, Dance and Drama and how these art forms have changed over time. They explore key periods in history and discover how Music, Dance and Drama reflect society and evolve through different styles and trends.
It is recommended that Year 2 students spend up to a duration of 20 minutes for homework per day. This includes 10 minutes of reading every night. Homework consists of daily reading, spelling and Mathematics activities. These activities are to be completed weekly. Homework is due each Thursday and will be brought home every Friday. Homework will commence in Week 4, however daily reading is essential.
Please record and sign your child’s reading log. An encouraging comment is always welcome! It is very important that you are reading with your child each night to ensure they are using their reading strategies, fluency, expression and self correcting at an error. Asking comprehension questions at the end is also essential.
A Maths Plus mentals book will be provided to all students. A weekly task will be set and we ask that this be returned each Thursday. Maths Plus follows a graded and spiralling approach, allowing for revision of concepts throughout the year. It will provide students with opportunities to sequentially develop, practise and master their skills and knowledge.
