YEAR ONE
Grade Bulletin - Term One, 2026

Love One Another:
This unit focuses on the concept of love, forgiveness and gratitude in our relationships with God and others. It begins with the children’s experience of friendship and explores Jesus’ example of loving one another as he loves us. The unit focuses on forgiveness and gratitude in relationships through two Gospel accounts – ‘How many times must we forgive?’ and ‘The Ten Lepers’.
Lent & Holy Week
Throughout Term One, students will focus on important seasons in the Church's liturgical calendar. They will learn that Lent is a time of reflection and growing closer to God, that Holy Week recalls the events in which Jesus showed his love for us, and that Easter is a joyful season celebrating the risen Jesus with us.
Creating Written Texts - The students will experience opportunities to engage with various quality texts throughout the term, including ‘Rosie’s Walk’, ‘The Wall in the Middle of the Book’, ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘Three’, ‘Do not open this book’ and ‘Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus!’ Students will use these texts to explore the textual concepts of narrative, characterisation, perspective and argument.
Reading - The students will continue to read decodable texts with automaticity, focusing on self-correcting errors and retrieving words automatically or by sounding out the word in their head instead of blending out loud.
Phonics and Spelling - Students are engaging with phonics and spelling on a daily basis. Students are explicitly taught different letter/sound correspondences firstly by identifying and recording letter/sound correspondences followed by reading and spelling words, reading and writing sentences and reading decodable texts.
Handwriting - The students will continue to work on their pencil grip, correct letter formation and writing within the lines.
This term, students will explore the topics of Chance and Time, Length, Combining and Separating Quantities, Position, Whole Number and Data. All classes will work through the early Stage One outcomes from the New South Wales K–2 Syllabus. Lessons will be differentiated to meet the diverse learning needs of students. Open-ended tasks with increasing levels of complexity will engage and challenge learners, while consolidation activities, daily review and fluency programs will support the development of essential skills and understanding.
This term, Year One will study the unit ‘Material World’. Students will explore and investigate a range of everyday materials and conduct experiments to test their ideas and predictions. They will learn how different conditions can affect materials and identify changes that occur in familiar items. Throughout the unit, students will observe how materials change, particularly through heating and cooling. They will investigate whether changes can be reversed and explore how quickly or slowly changes happen. Hands-on activities, such as testing which size of chocolate melts fastest, will help students develop important skills in predicting, observing and drawing conclusions about the world around them.
Year One students will be engaging with the topic ‘Features of Places’. Students explore what makes a place unique and special. They examine ways to care for these places and identify different features, including natural, managed, and constructed elements. Students also plan and design new features for places like parks and schools.
In term 1, students in Year 1 will engage in a variety of physical activities designed to develop and refine their fundamental movement skills. This will include developing their non-locomotive and locomotive movement skills such as running, hopping, skipping, throwing, catching and kicking. Through individual, group, and team-based activities, students will explore how to move their bodies effectively and with confidence.
Students will also participate in the 6-week Fit Futures Active Gymnastics program, starting in Week 3 and finishing in Week 9. This program will focus on developing their fundamental movement skills (FMS) while applying decision-making and problem-solving strategies to perform movement sequences. Throughout the program, students will build self-awareness and communication skills. They will have the opportunity to use various equipment, including mats, beams, bars, and mini trampolines, to enhance their gymnastics skills.
As part of our PDH program, students will participate in Open Parachute. This initiative provides practical mental health support and promotes authentic classroom discussions about the challenges students may face. The program includes activities designed to build important psychological skills, such as empathy, self-awareness, resilience and self-efficacy.
Music
In Creative Arts with Mr Parlato, students explore the theme Imagined Worlds through fantasy stories and fairy tales. These imaginative ideas are used to inspire learning as students continue to build their skills in Music, Dance and Drama. Students will also develop a deeper understanding of the key elements of the arts and learn how to appreciate different types of creative work.
Visual Arts
In Visual Arts, students are introduced to the fundamental elements of art, including line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and colour. Throughout the year, Year One students will engage in structured Visual Art lessons that incorporate these elements to create artworks using a range of materials and techniques. Students will explore ways to represent subject matter and ideas, and will examine how artists communicate meaning through their artworks. Learning will focus on the interrelated practices of making, appreciating, and exhibiting, as students develop their understanding of artistic processes and expression.
Homework will commence in Week 3 for Year One students. The focus will be on daily reading, sentence writing and revision of Tricky Words. Parents are requested to sign their child’s Reading Log and return it each Thursday. Homework books will be sent home on Fridays and are to be returned the following Thursday for marking. A nightly Maths Mentals task will also be included to reinforce key concepts and develop number fluency.
