Science at BPS
Term 1, Week 2
Welcome to a new adventure of learning in Science in 2026. The commencement of a new school year brings so much joy and excitement as we build on what we already know and make new discoveries on our learning journey. Sounds like science in a nutshell!
I am super excited to be working with all our students to build their understanding of our world through science and develop curiosity and investigation skills through our lessons this year.
Our term 1 topic is a focus on Earth and Space Science.
F- 2 will focus on the curriculum outcome 'Earth is one of 8 planets in our solar system; observing the sky reveals patterns in the changing positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars'
3/4 students will look at how rocks, minerals and soils are important Earth resources and have observable properties that enable them to be used in a variety of ways as well as a focus on the water cycle.
5/6 students will investigate our solar system and the relationship of gravity and cyclic phenomena such as the tides and moon phases. Our senior students are also participating for the first time this year in STEMpals which is a year long project where they will correspond with a real life scientist who is currently working in a field of science somewhere around the world.
Term 2 will be our Chemical science focus. Term 3 has a Biology focus and also features National Science week from August 15th - 23rd including our Science Day celebrations. Physical Science will finish off the year in Term 4.
We are also excited to have Science Club commencing in Term 1. This is a lunchtime club for those wanting to explore science acivities beyond the classroom. It will be open to grade 3-6 students initially and our Science Captains Kai and Josie will play a role in running the science club.
Throughout the year we look at the Human Endeavour aspect of science and in that vein it is exciting to see STEM featured in the Australian of the Year awards with Australia's first female qualified astronaut being announced as the winner for 2026. You can read more of her story here.
As always, if you have a science skill or resource you would like to share, please let me know or send it along with your child ( named pleased). Also, don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions regarding our Science program here at BPS.
Stay curious!
