Infants and Primary

It has been another busy few weeks in the Infants area of our school. We all very much enjoyed our visit from the NSW Rural Fire Service this week and learnt lots about fire safety, including ways to prepare for bush fire season, what to do in the event of an emergency, and how our Fire Fighters help us. A highlight was definitely having a go at putting out the ‘fire cones’ with the fire hoses. Thank you to all the volunteers who visited our school on the day and to Mrs Riles for coordinating the visit.
We have enjoyed having some work experience students in our Infants and Primary classes this week. Both Harry and Isaac have done a wonderful job of working with the students, helping teachers with resource preparation, having fun with the students in the playground and we hope they will consider a job in education in the future.
As we head toward the halfway mark of the school year, staff are busy finalising reports ready to be released on Compass at the end of term. We will be holding parent-teacher interviews early next term and each parent and carer is strongly encouraged to book a time with their child’s teacher/s to discuss their progress and learning goals. These interviews are a great chance to touch base, address any concerns and help set the scene for the second semester of learning. Please keep an eye out for more information about this as it gets closer.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students are flying with their learning with lots of foundational skills developing and students being able to ‘see’ how much they are learning. This is always great to see and really helps build that intrinsic motivation and love of learning. Over the next fortnight we will be revising all the clever things we have been learning this term, and this practice really helps consolidate concepts. We have been very pleased to have Mrs Corcoran back, and really enjoyed making and tasting our ANZAC slice – yum! Another highlight was having a special visit from our Year 5/6 friends for them to share the stories they had written. Everyone was very impressed with the books and they definitely inspired our younger writers!
Year 5/6
Our 5/6 students have been busy developing their careers as authors over the past few weeks. Each student worked hard to create their own picture book aimed at a younger audience, based on an important Australian landmark they researched. The picture books included an age-appropriate story about the landmark, along with interesting factual information.
Students designed their picture books online, creating their own illustrations to bring their stories to life. Taking on the roles of both authors and infant teachers, the 5/6 students then had the wonderful opportunity to read their stories to the K-2 students.
We are proud to announce that four outstanding students were awarded a special gold sticker by Mr Jones for the front covers of their books, recognising their exceptional creativity and effort.
Well done to all our 5/6 authors for their hard work and enthusiasm!
Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Boorowa Central School as part of the RFS South West Slopes Community Engagement team. I know we all enjoyed ourselves meeting students and staff, and I particularly enjoyed reading to the children from Kindi to years 3 and 4 and talking about fire safety. I was absolutely delighted to be asked a rather curly question from a student. I read a book called No Dragons for Tea in which a friendly dragon, invited to tea by his new friend, accidentally sets fire to the room after sneezing out flames from his mouth and nose. The dragon and his young friend do all the right things to exit the house, and the story ends with everyone safe and the fire extinguished. A boy in, I think maybe 2nd class(?) asked, if dragons can spout fire, why did he need to leave the house ...wouldn't he be unburnt by the flames? Well, I truly couldn't answer that one and said I would need to do some research on that, which I have done 🙂. I don't remember his name unfortunately, but I'd love it if you could find out who it was and let him know that in mythical dragon lore, dragons are impervious to their own fire, but can still be burnt by fire that is not their own...e.g. house fires etc. In order not to be burned by other fire, the dragon would need to have fireproof scales, and I don't think the dragon in the story had those.
Many thanks for a great day yesterday and best wishes to everyone,
Kind regards
