Co-Curricular

Celebrating Excellence in Music and Debating
As Acting Director of Co-Curricular, it is always a privilege to acknowledge the outstanding commitment and achievement demonstrated by our students across both our music and debating programs. Their efforts reflect not only individual talent, but also the strength of collaboration and shared purpose that characterises Co-Curricular life at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield.
Concert Band Success at the Conservatorium
On Sunday, our Concert Band represented the College with distinction at the Australian School Band and Orchestra Festival, held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Comprised of 25 musicians, under the tutelage of Dr Taylor, he reports that the ensemble displayed a high level of technical proficiency and, importantly, a refined capacity to perform cohesively as a unified group. Their ability to listen attentively, balance sound, and perform with precision was evident across their program.
The band presented three works:
Exuberance
Espresso
Pirates of the Caribbean
In recognition of their performance, the ensemble was awarded a Silver Award, a notable achievement at such a prestigious festival.
Senior Open B Debating
On Monday evening, our Senior Open B Debating Team competed against Waverley College on the challenging motion: “That our pursuit of a globalised world has eroded individual national values.”
Arguing as the affirmative, our students delivered a considered and well-structured case, engaging thoughtfully with complex issues surrounding identity, culture, and globalisation. While the adjudicated result favoured Waverley College, the debate was closely contested and reflected the high standard of both teams.
Representing the College on the evening were: Denzel, Lachlan and Christopher. They were ably supported by their fellow Senior Open B team members: Oscar, Nino and Heath.
A particular strength of this cohort lies in their longstanding experience working together. This continuity was evident in their collaborative approach, their ability to construct and extend arguments collectively, and the composure they displayed throughout the debate. Their commitment to teamwork and continuous improvement is commendable.
A Shared Commitment to Excellence
Across both music and debating, a consistent theme emerges: the importance of collaboration in achieving excellence. Whether performing as an ensemble or constructing and presenting a case, our students exemplify the values of dedication, mutual respect, and collective endeavour.
I congratulate all students involved in the way they have represented the College and for their ongoing commitment to Co-Curricular excellence.
This will be my last article as the Acting Director of Co-Curricular, I thank everyone for the support they have given me over the last month, and I look forward to welcoming Mr Lachlan Fear, our new Director of Co-Curricular next term.
