Celebrating a Semester of Knowledge Building

As we reach the halfway point of the year, we are celebrating the incredible learning that has taken place across our school.

Through our Content Knowledge and Text Construction, students from Foundation to Year 6 have developed strong phonics and decoding skills, expanded their vocabulary, and built a wealth of knowledge about the world around them. As students learn new concepts and vocabulary, they are increasingly using these words in their conversations and writing, strengthening both their communication and comprehension skills.

This semester, students explored a diverse range of topics:

Foundation

Our Foundation students explored My Family, learning about family members, family trees, celebrations, traditions, diversity and the unique stories that make every family special. They then expanded their horizons through My Place, My Country, My World, learning about continents, countries, habitats, animals, art and culture from around the globe.

Junior School

Junior School students travelled through time and around the world with units including My Place, Our Community History, and the Victorian Gold Rush, bringing history to life through their visit to Sovereign Hill. They also explored the novel Little Refugee, learned about Continents, Countries and Maps, and investigated Modern Japanese Civilisation.

Middle School

Middle School students developed their understanding of citizenship and society through Finding Our Heart, exploring democracy, laws and citizens. They journeyed Around Australia, studied the geography of Mountains and Mountain Ranges of the World, and completed a student-choice unit, with The Wild Robot selected as the winning topic. Students also explored the fascinating Dynasties of China and engaged with This is Home: Essential Australian Poetry.

Senior School

Senior School students tackled rich and complex topics through novel studies including Black Cockatoo, Dirrarn, A Ghost in My Suitcase, and Nanberry. Along the way, they explored Australian history, civics and citizenship, culture, identity and perspectives. Students also developed their understanding of economics and enterprise through the Understanding Business unit.

To learn more about what your child has been studying, try asking:

  • What is something new you learned this week?
  • What is a new vocabulary word you have learned recently?
  • What does that word mean, and can you use it in a sentence?
  • What has been your favourite Content Knowledge unit so far this year?
  • What is one fact that surprised you?
  • Can you teach me something about your current topic?
  • What connections can you make between different units you have studied?
  • What book or text have you enjoyed learning from the most?

We are incredibly proud of the knowledge, vocabulary and curiosity our students have developed throughout Semester One, and we look forward to the exciting learning opportunities that await in Semester Two!

Happy learning,

Mrs Martin
