On Tuesday, 19 August, the Year 12 Biology cohort had the opportunity to visit the Museum of Human Disease at UNSW. 

We were first greeted by a HSC Biology marker who gave us useful insights into how to respond to questions relating to infectious and non-infectious diseases. We then compared healthy organs with damaged ones, such as a preserved liver from a healthy donor versus one damaged by alcoholism, to visualise the impacts of lifestyle factors on the body. Inside the museum, we observed a range of formalin-preserved specimens that showed how different diseases can affect human organs. 

Seeing these changes firsthand made the content we learn in HSC Biology feel much more relevant and meaningful. For example, our study of renal dialysis was brought to life when we were able to examine a damaged kidney and see the physical consequences of impaired kidney function. 

The excursion was a fun and engaging way to explore the content beyond the classroom.
